Question:

Best Business Practice: Customer wants NSF check back?

I have a customer who wrote a check that came back NSF from the bank. They have since made good on it and paid the amount in cash. They would like their original check back. I would like to keep it for records. I'm wondering what the law is as the best business practice is. Thanks!

  1. I checked with my bank and was told you cannot get it back, but check with your financial institution and ask to speak to the manager....you may be able to persuade him/her....you never know.  Also ask about Check 21....it can help if you have NSF.

  2. Keep a copy and return the check.

The reason that they may want it is to insure that you cannot present it for payment again. (Some banks let you submit a check for payment twice).  Since they made good on it, that would seem to be a legitimate concern on their part.

  3. Make a copy of the check for your record and return the check to the maker.
