Look for the following:

Format: MiniDV, nothing at this price is on a par in terms of quality.  Avoid AVCHD cameras like the plague, you will have no end of editing woes.

Look for Sony or Panasonic:  Sony win out on ease of use and build quality, Panasonics win out on range of user controls & image quality.  You can now buy a 3ccd panasonic camcorder for your budget.  You should.  3CCD is far better colour accuracy.

Forget HD, at this end of the market you will have to make so many compromises.  Its for web so SD is more than enough.

Learn how to use the manual functions, focus, exposure and white ballance are the main ones.  Learn how to lock the shutter at a suitable speed (50 general, faster for fast moving subjects)

Learn how to shoot for web (no zooming, no panning, reframe & cut)

Buy a tripod.  For static shots (best for web) even a cheapie is better than none.  Buy a manfrotto 190 and you'll be using it in 20 years.

Think about sound.  Does the cam have a mic input?  Onboards are fine for ambient audio, c**p for dialogue or fx.

Look at packages like Sorenson Squeeze for cost-efficient flash encoding (better than You tube will do)

The Best two Camcorders around this price are:

1- Sony DCR-SR32      ÃƒÂ‚£254.82 with Tesco direct, deliv inc.

2- Sony DCR-SR52E   £265 with Amazon.co.uk, deliv inc.

Both are very good cameras with reasonable price. The SR32 is more popular and more recommended to buy. Experts rank it 90 among other camcorders while the other ranks 126.

However, the screen size of the SR52E is 2.7 inches while the SR32 is 2.5 inches.

Find out the UK equivalent of the Sony DCR-HC96. MiniDV tape provides best available video quality. Better than hard drive or flash... and ANYTHING is better than DVD based camcorders, DO NOT BUY A DVD BASED CAMCORDER.
