Looks like most of the people answered this already but I have to throw in my two cents.  Canon and Nikon are the two brands that you will hear any professional say when you ask them what kind of camera they use.  Great selection of Lenses and cameras in all price ranges... from simple point and shoot cameras to Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras (DSLR's).

I personally use a Canon EOS 5D, and the lenses that I have came from my 35mm EOS, back when I was still shooting on film.  I am not convinced that Digital has caught up with film in all aspects but I have not shot on film in about two years now because of the cost of processing the film.

you want a good lens for a good camera.  Canon is the way to go.

i opened this question thinking there were going to be a bunch of ppl saying that kodak or samsung were the best brand....ppl are smarter than i thought! lol...but yeah with either canon or nikon your gettting a lot for your money and a great product....nikon has great lenses (bc thats what nikon is known for) and very accurate color reproduction and very easy to use...canons are very fast and also very simple to use....look into the nikon S550 or the S600...

For SLR, Canon or Nikon.

on the negative aspects - Canon external flashes suck. If you're looking to go serious amateur, the ability to use the current EX line of flashes is limited. Go with Nikon if you're serious about photography.

I shoot Canon.

Regarding quality, they're both top notch. You're in good hands either way. Lots of good technical support on the web from users in either camp as well.

For Point and shoot, Canon and I've heard good things about Olympus and Sony
