Hey, I am looking for a camera to get and I wanted to know what is the best one out there for less than $500 dollars.

As of now, I am thinking about getting the Nikon D40 w/18mm-to-55mm lens.

Thoughts on that camera? Any others you think I should look into?

  1. It is one of the best entry level DSLR cameras to date.

Add the 55-200 mm VR lens later and you will have an excellent camera for shooting the kids at AYSO soccer games.

  2. you cannot go wrong with the D40. It gives you more for you dollar in that price range than any other entry level DSLR. I have a D40 and a D300 and I still often grab the D40 when shooting family pictures or shooting for fun. Its a joy to use. Easy controls to learn. Almost intuitive control locations. Its lightweight and it takes great picturs. The camera has enough capability that as you learn and grow you will be able to use the more advanced features of the camera. And you can get other lenses to meet your needs

If you had a bit more I would say the D60 as it does offer somethings the D40 does not but I would not hesitate to buy the D40 all over again. In fact my brother needed a camera for a class and I told him to get the D40
