Question:

Best Cello for Solo Performance?

I really really REALLY want to learn how to play the cello, for it is a beautiful instrument. So, my question is, what kind of cello should I get for personal use only? I might play with a few ensembles or maybe my future colleges' orchestra if I get that good, but if I don't I just want to get one for personal use to play for personal gain.

What kind of cello should I get?

  1. Well I used to have a 6000 Dollar cello (which is nothing in what some people spend on their instrumetns) and technically i still have it, but I've gone to mostly using a 500 dollar Gibson Cello that I got on ebay.  This cello is from the 1930s or 40s, and sounds magical.  It just feels perfect for me and plays how i need acello to play.  When I play with an orchestra (ive played professionally in a number of orchestras, and even tried out ofr the LA philharmonic when i was 17,) I still use my expensive cello because it looks nicer and fits in better with the rest of the custom made instruments, however playign by myself or recording or playing with a string ensemble or trio or quartet, I always use my Gibson.  They are a very low price, and sound amazing.

  2. If you have not played an instrument before, get a fairly basic student instrument. You do not need to sink big money into a cello, only to find you don't really practice after a few months. In fact, you might try doing a year's rental contract. Most places will count all the rental towards the purchasing price, if you buy the instrument.

I played the cello, and love it. My job gave me tennis elbow, and now the cello sits in the closet, while I am still rehab'ing my arm.

  3. I've been playing the cello for four years and I agree, it is a beautiful instrument. The best way to find whats right for you is to go to a local dealer and ask. The experts helped me pick my first cello and they really made a good choice. Be sure to get some good resin and a rock stop with your cello. Heres some info about the instrument.
