  1. You will have a few choices.  You have to find dimensions that fit your dash, color or back and white, get the proper machine for fresh or salt water, screen size and which cartography you want.  I would opt for the biggest screen I could afford to make it easier to use.

  2. There are some nice Garmins available for 700 bucks or lower. I used to own a Eagle, which I believe is a division of Lowrance, which is also a good company. Then you have Furuno. So check out Boaters World, West Marine and any other marine products company and you should have no problem finding a GPS for around 700 bucks

  3. for 700 you will be able to get a very good Lowerance. They are marine based and come with map etc. I had one on my seafox and to be honest it was great  easy to read easy to program and you could link it to the radio so if you had a problem you hit the red mayday button and it gave you location too to the coast guard.   I am not sure of many  Garmin that have that function.  I believed a payed about $600 with fitting by theprofesionals.   that was a depth finder fish finder GPS with radio connection.

  4. first place--Garmin. all others second.

  5. you could go down the pc route, get a gps reciever (60 bucks) and some electronic charts then you are away. probably a  waterproof plotter with a transponder to feed the fish finder data is the best option. I would go for ray marine, its got me around the world. Remember electronics can fail, alway keep a backup portable gps with lots of spare batteries and paper charts. happy fishing.
