  1. There's a reason that USC pays Pete Carroll almost $2.8MIL a year: It's because he is the best college coach in America today.

Jim Tressel is 33-5 his last 3 years at OSU and has to be included despite back-to-back BCS title game losses.

Rounding out my Top 5 would be Bob Stoops at Oklahoma, Tommy Tuberville at Aubrun, and Mack Brown at Texas.

  2. 1st Pete Carroll at USC. Going from a middle road team to back to back and almost to back. That's something that many coaches can't say. Plus he always has the top recruiting class.

2nd Skip Holtz at ECU. The team had only won three games in the past two years before he got there. Now they're 8-5 and producing NFL talents like Chris Johnson and Aundre Allison. And they should be better this year. Did I mention he's the son of all time great head coach Lou Holtz?

3rd Urban Meyer at Florida.  He's gotten Florida to the top and is looking to make it two in three years. He's recruited Heisman winners and is gathering more talent every year.

  3. Good question!

I would have to say Jim Tressel. Yes, I'm a Buckeye fan, but I can honestly say that even if I wasn't, he's still be my pick. When I look at a coach, I try to see the whole picture. Winning is great and all, but I also consider the graduation rate of his players (after all, they are in college, right?), his overall demeanor and sportsmanship.

I think Tressel is a cool, collected man who has nothing but class on the sidelines and in press conferences alike. I think he represents The Ohio State University well. I've never seen him throw headphones, yell at his players, curse the refs, etc.

There's not many coaches you can say that about these days.

  4. Pete Carroll is the best College Football head coach based on the amount of success he has had over the past several years. He does a really good job of recruiting talent to replace the talent that has left. That team has almost always seemed to have good starters on both offense and defense since he has been head coach. He has turned out some good pro's as well.

  5. Tubbs hands down.

Under Tuberville, Auburn has a winning record against its three biggest rivals, LSU (5-4), Georgia (5-4), and Alabama (7-2). He has led Auburn to 6 straight victories over in-state rival Alabama, the longest win streak in this rivalry since 1982, which was the year Auburn broke Alabama's 9 year streak.

Tuberville has also established himself as one of the best big game coaches in college football, winning 9 of their last 11 games against Top 10 opponents (since the start of the 2004 season). In 2006, his Tigers recorded victories over two Top 5 teams who later played in BCS bowls, including eventual BCS Champion Florida. Tuberville has a 5-1 career record versus Top 5 teams, including 3 wins versus Florida

  6. 1. Jim Tressel - Won 2002 national title (phantom pass interference call aside, he still won) has led Ohio State to the past two national titles, and won four straight Big 10 titles. The reason I have him over Urb and Pete Carrol is that he has dominated his rivalry game over Lloyd Carr and Michigan for years.

    2. Urban Meyer - Won 2007 national title and produced Heismann Trophy winner Tim Tebow, while playing in the toughest conference in football. Showed he could win without top tallent, while coaching Alex Smith and Utah. Recruits great despite being in the same state as two other recruiting giants (Miami and FSU).

    3. Pete Carrol - Won a national title (the split with LSU is garbage and I wont aknowledge it in this) and played in another. Has won 7? straight Pac 10 titles and a handful of Rose Bowl victories. Losses to Stanford, UCLA, and Oregon State in the past few seasons (all games they should have won) are why I have him at number three.

    A few honorable mentions:

    - Les Miles - LSU

    - Bob Stoops - Oklahoma

    - Mark Richt - Georgia

    Rising Star coach:

    Bret Beilema - Wisconsin

  7. I would say Pete Carroll or Urban Meyer.

I also think Tommy Tuberville and Les Miles deserve mention in this conversation.

  8. jeff jagodzinski

  9. Bob Stoops 97-22 record at Oklahoma won the most game since 2000

Won 5 Big 12 Championships which is no easy task

He has only lost twice at home in 2001 to rival Oklahoma State and to TCU in the 2005 opener

Stoops revived the Oklahoma Football Program and he isn't done yet
