- 5' 9"

- 165 lbs

- I want something that can help me take a hit better

- Also something that doesnt take awhile to learn

- It should be a standing fighting style

- Mainly using my arms but legs are okay if necessary

- Would only be able to learn part time (8-10 hours a week?)

Any Suggestions? Thanks.

  1. yeah, either pay money and take a boxing class, or buy two sets of boxing gloves and a case of beer, invite some buddys over and find out who's tougher. you'll take a hit better and trust me you'll learn real fast how to fight.

i took taekwondo for over  11 years and i am a jr olympic champ. but its 80% feet 20% hands

  2. I would suggest boxing. Since most strikes you will ever be hit with are punches, you're better off learning how to take a punch. In boxing, you don't have to be big to be dangerous. I'm 6', 190 lbs. and I wouldn't mess with a guy your size who's a skilled boxer.

  3. Boxing would be most practical but if you're looking for flare go for Kyokushin Karate.  I doubt you'd find a dojo around your neighborhood or even state but it's what you're looking for.  Standing martial art that focuses on fist attacks and is able to take a hit.  A LOT of hits.

  4. Boxing or wing chun I'd Say :)***

  5. It does not matter how big you are, what would matter is skill, dedication and technique. There are plenty of mid-lever 155lb fighters who could but your average 200lb tough guy is a coma. Most legit training gyms will let you have a free trial. I would recommend that you try all of the facilities in your area to get a true feel for what you like. If you can find a gym that offers Krav Maga i would start there considering its best used for practical self defense rather than competition. If all else fails buy a gun.

  6. I know it seems like the others, but I would say jujitsu or boxing or just basic tae kwon do or parkour~~

~Jujitsu is learning how to block and counter hits

~Boxing is great for reflexes, and if training for a little, you will learn how to take hits, counter, but I think it helps mostly on reflexes.

~Tae Kwon do is good too, I did it for almost 7 years. It is a variety, you learn Jujitsu, forms, blocks, strikes, and how to use your surroundings.

~I would say parkour isn't a way of fighting at all... But its the coolest. You train your body, and it is counted as a philosophy, not just for fun. Moves include stalls, vaults, flips, and basically urban movements to move efficiently. This trains your body, because you won't take hits from people but it takes some practice, and you train mainly the strength in your arms. It doesn't take too long, but once you get used it it it really flies.

Out of all of these, if you are mainly learning how to take hits and have it as a fighting style, try boxing or taekwondo. Jujitsu is included in taekwondo in some places, like my old dojo place. But if you want to mainly train your arms and develop a strong body, parkour is the best. Its also the coolest.

    :D hope this helps.
