I'm 100% in love with AVG 8.0 Free Edition which you can download at http://www.filehippo.com (a great site for free, safe downloads).  I used AVG at home, at work and we use it on customer's computers.  It's effective, updates itself and it's not a memory hog like McAfee and Norton.  

For good antispyware protection, I'd recommend either Windows Defender or Spyware Blaster from Filehippo if you want something that's always running in the background like your antivirus does.  If you want something you can run periodically just to check things out, I'd get Ad-aware...also available from the same website.  

And with any of this software, make sure you always install the latest updates and definitions before running a scan!

All of them are free, as powerful as paid programs, like Norton and McAfee, and don't use up as many resources.

Just boot into Safe Mode (Press F8 when turning on the computer) and run full scans.

I also vote for AVG.  I have been using it ever since it came out years ago.

The only time I ever got a virus was during a short period that it was not installed after a system rebuild.

I has caught numerous viruses  over the years.

As for spyware, I always use Ad-aware and spybot together.

One will catch whatever the other does not.
