  1. This has changed over the years. My high school offered all the languages you mentioned except Japanese and included Latin and Italian.  At this point, any language in which you do well will be accepted. French and Spanish are probably the most popular, but German and Russian are languages taken by fewer students and may put you ahead of the crowd.

  2. my guess would be Japanese or Spanish

  3. I'd just pick something you can suffer through. Spanish will probably be the most used, but It's not really about which one. Its about the grade you get in the class. If you know you aren't interested in Spanish for example and end up getting a C, is that really better than picking something you were interested in but thought was less prestigious?

Also do you really like it enough to take it for 2 semesters?

Talk to your councilor. He probably wont help a lot, but he can tell you the requirements for whatever college you want to go to.

  4. As far as what highly selective colleges prefer, I really don't know.  However, I think that learning Spanish can be so beneficial nowadays.  I minored in French, which is a beautiful language, but I have met so many Spanish-speaking people during my life.  I wish that I had learned Spanish b/c I think that someone who is fluent in both Spanish and English might have many opportunities to teach, translate, and just have a great time!
