  1. for $4,000

    look for

98 Acura CL, 98 Ford Mustang V6, 98 Honda Accord or Civic, 98 Nissan Frontier or Pathfinder, 98 Subaru Impreza or Legacy, 98 -00 Toyota Corolla or Echo 00

these are all reliable and will last longer than other cars in this price range.

  2. Buy a used Mercedes diesel and run waste vegetable oil like me.

  3. Toyota Yaris/Echo

    Toyota Corolla

    Honda Civic

    Mazda 3i

They are dependable, frugal on gas, hold their values pretty well and test well against competitors cars.  The Yaris in fairness doesn't test as well as a typical Toyota, but it is pretty bare bones model that is a little rough around the edges.  The Mazda 3i tests well, but I can't help but think Ford cheaped out on some parts and they will be problematic in a few years time.

Focus's are decent, but not really reliable and drop in value pretty fast.  Cobalts and Cavaliers are junk, and please please avoid anything made by Chrysler.

If you are looking for an even older and thus less expensive vehicle, the newest Accord or Camry with a 4 cylinder you can afford are also good bets.  Subaru's are also good choices, but do not fare as well in the MPG area as they all All Wheel Drive and a little heavier.
