Best Man Speech????? HELP!!!?

Question

Do you have to tell a story about the groom in a best man speech? My Dad is getting married on Saturday and I'm writing my best man speech and im just wondering if I have to tell a story about him. Any other tips would be VERY helpful and appreciated. THANKS!!

And if you want to welcome his bride into the family, you can add "we are glad to welcome Sally Ann into our family" and wish she and Dad the very best."

my husband was just best man in his brothers wedding. he kept it short and simple. here's exactly what he said:

"Hi, my name is Joe, I'm the brother of the groom. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for being here today. And I want to say congratulations to my brother and his new wife!"

Then he rose his glass and said 'cheers' and everyone rose their glass and said it too.  The End.

When my brother toasted his best friend, he said, and I DO quote, "Here's to you, and here's to her.  And here's to love and laughter.  May she be true as long as you, but not a moment after"...LOL

But seriously, this is your father.  Has he played an important role in your life and the lives of your siblings?  If so, mention that.  Maybe not a specific story, but like "he was always there for us when we needed him"... and maybe include a few nice things about his bride too!

I would use some sort of story to explain why your dad means a lot to you, or why you like his bride (if you do) or why you look up tp him. Something that explains the person he is makes for a great speech. The best "best man" speech I ever heard was in that show "My Boys" on TBS:

"When Bobby and I were kids, we used to sit at the bleachers at Wrigley trying to catch homeruns. Depending on the wind and who was at bat, I would switch seats about a dozen times a game. But not Bobby. Bobby would pick a seat, sit in it, and wait. And during those years, I never caught one ball. Bobby caught four. That pretty much sums up my little brother. He's always had the patience and the faith to wait for good things to find him. That's true with his friends, and his career, and now Elsa. Anyway here's to Bobby for catching Elsa. Homerun number five."

In that one speech, the best man established the groom's character and his confidence in choosing the bride he did (and spoke highly of her). Not only that, it was short, sweet and memorable.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is ____ and it has been my job today to ensure that _____ was not himself. Which basically meant, punctual and sober.

I’ve known him for ________ years and I can honestly say that I’ve never seen him happier as when he met _____. She has not only changed his life for the better, but she has brought out the best in him.

I want to thank him for asking me to be his best man, because this is truly an honor. I’d also like to thank the families for helping them both prepare for this beautiful wedding. They are a great couple and I wish them all the happiness in the world. Ladies and gentlemen, would you please raise your glass and join me in a toast to the happy couple:
