Question:

Best Metal Polish?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

I'm doing an etching on a brass plate just like the project from http://steampunkworkshop.com/electroetch.shtml

I've done two others previously, polished them at first, but now they're dull. How can I polish them so that they stay shiney?

I might also note that there is matte black spray paint on it also, if you didn't read the link.

Thanks in advance. :)

  1. You could try various brass polishes or copper cleaner type things. (find them in the cleaning aisle at the grocery store). But some can be abrasive so i don't like them as much.

For something non-abrasive you could try NevrDull (look for it at the hardware store). It will come in a can, and inside there will be a bunch of wadding with the polish already in it. Tear off a piece (you don't need much) and rub the metal, let it dry a little, then wipe it away. It should hold the polish for a while but it depends on how often you handle it.

  2. Baking soda and lemon juice, although that might take off the spray paint.

  3. I've used Never-dull on brass, copper, and chrome fixtures and parts for years... including around enamel paint.  I did this DAILY on various "illusions" for a theater magic-show for a year

Acid etched brass WILL be dull as a result of the etching material.  It's just time for polish, soft-cloth, and Q-Tips.

I also use Wright's Copper Polish often on projects.

  4. Semi-chrome works well on most metals. You could use a clear laquer to finish it to try to hold the shine. It might work if you don't handle it to much.
