I've been to quite a few - I personally like Carolina Beach or Kure Beach - Kure Beach is less strict, not as many parking issues as Carolina, both beside Fort Fisher and Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington - Fort Fisher has the battlegrounds you can visit and the NC Aquarium on the tip of the island - I was there last week and stayed for $59.99 a night at the Drifters Reef - easy walk to the beach (maybe a 5 minute walk) and well worth it

I've been to Emerald Isle, its quite a bit furthur of a drive from where I am, its ok, but nothing really going on. Same with Atlantic Beach, which is practically beside Emerald.

Theres nothing really going on at the NC beaches, mostly all in Myrtle. Everything is turning into condos, so people can make money.

Corolla is a pretty place. Kind of expensive, but worth the drive. Try some places on the Outer Banks if you want to check out the lighthouses. Depends on what you want to do for the trip and what you're planning to spend. The Outer Banks seems to be a lot more expensive than the rest.
