Best Places to See REAL Ireland for 20-somethings?

Question

I'm traveling to Ireland in the spring, and I want to get to know REAL Ireland.. not the touristy, pretty green rolling hills Ireland, although one afternoon I'm sure I'll want to take a pretty walk.. I mean places to meet locals my own age (early 20s), where locals hang out, etc. etc. With that said, where are the best towns/cities for me to meet said young people? And have a good time while I'm at it? Thank you!

Yes, as Misty said Galway is very hip and vibrant, Kilkenny has some very traditional pubs with Irish music, Waterford also a has a very wide range of things to do.

Galway's a'lways pretty buzzy and Letterkenny in Co.Donegal has a very good young night life scene.

I vote Galway too.  There is plenty of nightlife, lots of schools around (read:  young people) and MORE THAN ENOUGH pubs to sit and have a pint where striking up a conversation with a local is deceivingly easy.

Nearby (within walking distance) there is Salthill where the promenade snakes around the bay and you can see bright white Irish people soaking in the sun in 60 degree weather.  On a clear day, you can see the hills of Clare across the bay.

Speaking of which, the "pretty green rolling hills" of Ireland are not the touristy part.  That's just what Ireland is like.  It's the rocky, stoney, heart-stopping CLIFFS that tend to attract the tourists.

Just be careful...I came here two years ago for a week 'visit' and now I'm married to an Irishman, walking the green hills every day, and blissfully permanent!

Head west, to Galway, or Limerick, the two main university cities of the west. You'll find lots of young people there, particularly in August, September and October.

You could also head to Cork, for the same.

Dublin, for all that it is the capital city of the Republic of Ireland, is still very English in feel - and my friends who live win Dublin agree with me on this.

Dublin city centre, there is no shortage of places to go and there are always plenty of people around.

Galway city is also fun, good night life.

a perfect place to go is belfast which has moved on  lot in the last 10 years... theres the tourist side of it and the giants causeway etc is only over an hours drive away... belfast has a vibrant nightlife but if you want to meet 20-somethings i would suggest going clubbing but avoid the bambu beach club because it is filled with 16 and 17 year olds... milk and skye are usually suited to the older age bracket generally but milk is pretty expensive

if your in your early 20s and coming to Ireland i would stay in Cork and killarney for you will have the night life that suits your age group you can if you so wish pick some that would have an Irish flavor and you can use both places visit places of Irish interest for e.g outside of what cork city would have to offer you can go to fota wild life park cobh the last port of call for the Titanic you can visit blarney and go to the castle and kiss the stone in killarney outside of what it has to offer you can go see the lakes go to the gap and the ring of Kerry
