  1. I buy nutrena empower for my 16.2hh TB. It cost about $25 a bag but it works. My guy gets about a scoop of nutrena compete with about 1/2 scoop of the empower. He's a hard keeper so this seems to work great for him.

  2. Senior feed is a complete balanced feed, meaning you can feed it alone, or combine it with hay, etc.  It is highly digestible.  My hard keeper who used to tend to colic has not colicked since I switched to senior, and his weight is beautifully maintained...I also give him rice bran for the fat, but it isn't necessary with the senior feed.

My vet suggests it for all ages of horse, and she also has researched and prefers Purina.

I give a cup of rice bran a day in summer, and 2 cups in winter to this same horse.  Mine comes in a powdered form that I add to the senior feed.  I don't know the brand...I'll post it later if I get down to the barn to check.

  3. They say this stuff called EquiJewel is the most balanced, so you don't have to worry about the calcium and phosphorus levels, but my horses wouldn't touch the stuff.  But the gobble up the Empower, probably because it's pelletted instead of flakes.  As long as you balance the diet with some sort of complete feed like Senior, Ultium, Strategy, etc.,  you shouldn't have to worry about the imbalances mentioned in that article someone posted.  I love rice bran for putting weight on a horse and have never had problems with it.
