Question:

Best Route to Be a Police Officer?

Right now I will be starting my freshman year at college. I want to at some point be a police officer. I also want to join the Army. I have been thinking about not returning next year for college and joining the military instead. If I want to be a police officer what is the best route, joining the Army next year and after a few years of service, apply for a job as a police officer and finish college later? Or would I be better off finishing college now, joining the Army, then become a police officer. Also, how much of an advantage would being an MP in the Army be over someone coming out of college with a degree in Criminal Justice?

  1. being in the military counts as your colleg degree you should be fine. good luck i your future maybe ill cya some time ovr in the states (im english)

  2. go for the degree in criminal justice then you could step up and get a promotion...with a degree you wont go much further than a cop...if you just want to be a cop that's fine also I'm going for the same thing and have done much research about it....i def wouldn't join the military the way its going now why fight someone else war....stay in school become a cop and help people instead of fight a war over oil fight the war on crime.....if you join the army you don't need to go to college...its either 60 college credits or 4 years in the armed forces with Honorable discharge...my advice man is well what i would do is get my bachelors in criminal justice work on the police force some year try to make it as a detective i hopefully would like to join the DEA....well here's the NY-PD website if that's where your located there's much info on it...... http://www.nypdrecruit.com/Default.aspx good luck

  3. Go to cop school..

  4. You can do what I am doing right now. I have two years of college done and i joined the Army National Guard as a M.P. I get to go to college first which is a program you can do with the ARNG. You will have two years non-deployable after basic training and can get your degree in Criminal Justice. You will also get a secret Clearance during basic training, and training that law enforcement agencies like. Depending on your area you can get up to $20,000 sign on bonus and all of your college paid for plus up to $850 a month from the National Guard while you go to school. If you need any other information Feel free to ask.

  5. Slow down.

    Finish college first.

Don't become an MP.  I tried it in the USAF, and it sucked. I'm a cop now, and being an MP gives you some experience, but you don't need it.
