Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Killzone 3 and Gears of War 3 duke it out to see which game will come out on top as the Best Shooter for 2011.
A number of titles came out this year that tried to break the generic and repetitive format of the shooter genre; Bulletstorm, Rage and the not so well received Bodycount were a few. Yet, in the end it was the usual suspects that ended up being shortlist
as our nominees for the Best Shooter of 2011 award.
Before we announce the winner, which the staff here at Bettor.com spent hours arguing and having our personal flame wars over, it would be appropriate to give each nominee a few moments in the spotlight.
Battlefield 3: Starting things off with Electronic Arts’ fastest selling game to date. Battlefield 3 ditched the experimental approach of the Bad Company games, which were more of an offshoot, to return to the true, nitty-gritty, no nonsense
Battlefield formula.
The single-player campaign took on a much more serious tone and there was even some Russians killing French policemen controversy in the mix as well.
However, the game’s main strength was its unbelievably solid multiplayer that had everyone hooked provided they got past the relatively steep learning curve.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: it signalled what has to be the best selling trilogy of all time as Modern Warfare 3 tied up all the loose ends in a bloody, action packed affair. Fan favourites were killed off and some of the set-pieces
will live long in video gaming memory.
The multiplayer was pretty much the same addictive core experience with plenty of added diversity when it came to the modes gamers could opt to play in.
Killzone 3: the hype surrounding Killzone 2 was huge, and to some extent it lived up to it. As a result, there was a lot more expected of Killzone 3 when it was first announced at E3 over a year ago.
The game’s single-player was beefed up with some heavyweights brought in to lend their voices to the in-game characters (Malcolm McDowell being the most notable). It had plenty of jaw dropping moments yet it did not satisfy everyone as much as was expected.
The multiplayer on the other hand was a Godsend, as the superb gameplay and modes from Killzone 2 had been refined, polished and perfected to give one of the most atmospheric experiences on any console.
Gears of War 3: Marcus Fenix is an icon in the gaming world. No other convicted prisoner has ever been as loved or as feared as the Gear. So it would not be fair to leave out Epic’s brilliant conclusion to the Gears of War trilogy.
The game was solid and the trailers were superb. All in the game, both single player and multiplayer delivered where it mattered: with solid content on both fronts.
And the winner is Battlefield 3
With its catchy dubstepped sound playing in every trailer along with its brilliant gameplay, Battlefield 3 gets our nod for shooter of the year because it managed to hold its own when faced some rather intense competition.
Worthy mentions:
Dead Space 2
Bulletstorm
Resistance 3
