Best Shooter Nominees - Golden Joystick Awards 2011 – FEAR 3, Medal of Honor - Part 6
In the penultimate look at the nominees for the Best Shooter category in this year’s edition of the Golden Joystick Awards, we will take a look at two contrasting games which are poles apart when it comes to their settings, but very similar in terms of the
level of intensity that they bring.
Before that however, it is time for another short recap on the nominees covered in previous articles. So far a total of 10 nominees have already been looked at including; Brink, Bulletstorm, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Crysis 2, Dead Space 2, GoldenEye 007,
Halo: Reach, Homefront, Killzone 3 and Red Faction: Armageddon.
FEAR 3
Also known as F3AR by the marketing wiz at Warner Brothers Studios, First Encounter Assault Recon (FEAR) 3 continued the story of the, now not so, little demonic girl Alma.
This time around however, it was more of a family affair as her two sons, Point-man, the protagonist from the first game and Vettel, the antagonist from the FEAR, teamed up to stay alive, albeit for completely different underlying motives.
Introducing more action, the same trademark haunting moments the game has become known for and a slick new cooperative mode, FEAR 3 did well in propelling the series to another level.
However, like Dead Space 2, there was some criticism that the game went more on the action side and less on the horror side and we would have to agree. True, the game did give everyone plenty of scares, but compared to the first game, FEAR 3 was more about
shooting than scares.
Where the game came up trumps though was in multiplayer, which was phenomenal. Taking this up a notch with its own unique and often terrifying take on the standard multiplayer modes, the game delivered a fresh and intense experience for gamers.
Our verdict: A game that will be remembered for its superb multiplayer and is a tricky one to place in terms of votes. Seeing how it is a fairly recent release and that it is still fresh in the gamers’ mind, one can expect it to finish somewhere around the
middle when voting concludes.
Medal of Honor
The Medal of Honor series has always been known for one thing: Accurately recreating atmosphere and giving players a look into the emotions and camaraderie which soldiers on the battlefield have.
The game did not do too well with the critics, which seemed to come following the aftermath of EA’s choice to have one of the two opposing multiplayer factions named ‘Taliban’. The name was changed but it seemed that the damage had been done.
The ensuing uproar did not bode well for the game which, although similar in more ways than one to the Battlefield Bad Company series, was a satisfying experience overall.
Our verdict: Medal of Honor did not do enough to standout and make a name for itself, despite the fact that it had plenty of set pieces. It seems the game will be condemned to the lowly spot when voting concludes.
