Question:

Best Spanish wines to bring back to the U.S.?

I want to bring back several bottles of (red) wine after a month-long stay in Madrid. I love Riojan wine, but I'm open to other suggestions. The more specific you can be, the better.

Also, I'm operating on a bit of a budget (I'm a student), so I don't want to spend too much money here; I'm looking for recommendations of great, affordable wines that are hard to come by in the States.

Thanks!

  1. Why does it have to be red? There are several good, inexpensive whites out there too like Diamante or Corbeta, or any Vino del Condado de Huelva. The Condado wines are drier, but very good served cold.

Don't let anyone sell you on Valdepeñas, they are inexpensive reds but not wonderful (think "house wine in a carafe").

I strongly recommend Viña Aljibe. They have a website you can order from.

  2. Just make sure to look on the 'net, and make sure you don't find one that is commonly available in the states, or its sort of a waist if you ask me.   even if the wine isn't that great, getting "unique" ones are what i would aim for going to a foreign country.

  3. I love Spanish wine.  Bring back a couple of bottles of a good Tempranillo.  Then, invite me over.

  4. Rioja is to Spain what Chianti is to Italy.  Very popular and widely consumed.  Tempranillo is the major grape used in the production of Rioja.

Rioja wines are classified according to the quality of the grapes used and how long the wine is aged.

The classifications are crianza, reserva and gran reserva.

You may also want to try wines from the Ribera Del Duero region of Spain. That region produces an exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon.

  5. Forget the wine and grab some Calvados

  6. red wines from Somontano.(Absum, mingua, milano)

white wines: fábregas, rueda, absum, montesierra...
