Question:

Best Ticket Type for a London to Cardiff trip (round trip)?

I will be visiting from the US next month, and am planning on taking the train from London to Cardiff , and then returning by train to London from Cardiff. The main BritRail site offers point-to-point tickets and 4-day Flexipass options, both of which are pretty expensive. The Great Western train offers tickets called Firstminute Fares, which seem like you purchase them in advance for a specific train time, and if you have to change the time, you pay some penalties. Any opinions on which offers the best deal for a traveller?

  1. FGW is the only option from London so check out the FGW site and check out the Saver fares as these could be cheaper. The Brit Rail site can be of use but you need to remember Public Transport in the UK has to make money and as a result can be very expensive.

If money is tight check out National Express as coach travel can be very cheap if booked in advance. Can book for as low as £6 at the moment.

Try the above websites for details... You may have to change at Bristol, but otherwise quite a direct route, alternatively travel by coach....
