Best Vancouver beach?

Question

I'm looking for a good beach in Vancouver where I can hang out, but also have the option to walk around in the adjacent area, perhaps going looking at shops and stuff. Which beach best suits this description?

If you go to Kits Beach, (Kitsilano) then you are very close to one of the most interesting shopping areas on West 4th where you can go to all kinds of shops and restaurants.  Its about a 4 block walk.  Kits Beach has a younger crowd and its a fun time.  If you go further west, you will reach Jericho Beach and Spanish Banks.  They are fantastic for a bit more privacy, a lot quieter, great for picnic and spending the day.  No shops close by though.
