Question:

Best XC full suspension bike less than 400$

I am in research of MTB for my girl. Should I look more for used one or brand new one? I am looking for a decent XC bike with full suspension.

I found some not bad ones on amazon like Iron Horse. I would consider bikes as an option like: cannondale, specialized, kona, santa cruz or any decent brand. You might say that a full suspension XC bike among these brands is far from my budget limit, but due to my outdated knowledge on MTB, i may miss some of the new brands on the market in that price range. Any suggestions are very welcome :)!

  1. I hate to say it, but you're not going to get a new, decent full suspension bike in that price range. You can get a heavy, bad full suspension bike. Are you sure you really need full suspension -- even pros do a lot of racing on hardtails, depending on the terrain. You can, however, get a pretty decent hardtail for $400. Better yet, you can get a slightly used hardtail that originally sold for $600-$700 if you ask around and check craigslist. All the brands you listed are pretty decent, plus Trek and Gary Fisher.

  2. I am sure that you understand that rear suspension isn't for comfort, it is to keep the rear wheel on the ground for better handling. Giving your girl a full suspension bike will put her at a distinct disadvantage... it'll really tire her out and make her dislike riding.

As mentioned before, you aren't going to find ANY full suspension bikes of any quality for less than $400 but you WILL find some OK hardtails from Raleigh, KHS, Diamondback and others for that kind of loot. I suggest that you ignore brand names at this price and look for the best features. Visit a few area bike shops and try out as many as possible, then make your choice. Don't get sold at your first visit.

MOST important is to stay away from discount stores like Costco or Walmart... right now there is a guy asking questions about how he can make the bike he bought at Costco better... and the fact is he can't.
