  1. In San Francisco, try the Maharani:

Excellent food, good prices, good service.

I recommend that for a first time Indian dining experience you do NOT try anything vindaloo style.  Vindaloo is truly fiery hot.  I think you have to be Indian to appreciate it.  Anyway, hapy dining.

  2. I'm not so familiar with Indian places over there (I live in Fremont). But for a beginner, the best is to find an Indian Buffet. A lot of Indian restaurants have buffet lunches and normal dinners. With a buffet, you can see what everything looks like, and you can try a little bit of something instead of blindly picking something to be your whole meal.

Some foods that almost everyone likes are Tandoori Chicken (a type of barbeque) and Nan (flatbread). Mango Lassis are also good. They are like a smoothie. Beyond that, every buffet has a different selection, so just try a few things and see if you like them.

A buffet lunch will cost around $10, depending on the selection. And of course, the more Indian people you see in the restaurant, the more authentic the food is.

  3. Try Pakwan. I used to go to the 16th St place when I lived there, but now, it seems, various locations around the Bay Area-I am copying the website below. The chicken tikka masala with nan was superb! And very affordable. Its very cafe style though, so if you want a smarter meal, try Indian Oven, on Fillmore at Haight, Excellent, but a little more expensive.

  4. Start off by going to an ultra-affordable all-you-can-eat buffet Indian place (see the list below) and try anything that looks good to you - you will soon find yourself even sampling the foods that at first glance seemed rather odd-looking, but you will be rewarded for your courage as Indian food is amazingly seasoned - most of it not too spicy (hot) - and I swear you'll soon be hooked!http://www.inetours.com/Pages/Dining_Arc...

When you're ready to branch out - also try my fav place in the Bay Area - Vik’s Chaat Corner in Berkeley @ 726 Allston Way

  5. I've found a nice directory of restaurants that might help. You can narrow down the California results by cities close to you. If you call nearby restaurants you can narrow down wich one would work best for you. http://www.restaurantreviewsratings.com/...

  6. Bombay Garden in San Mateo

  7. Great India Restaurant

While the prices are a bit above the cheapest indian food, the service and quality easily surpasses anything else. Try the chicken tika masala..

  8. the new Delhi on Ellis is great  good food l nice prices  and a wonderful  bar  if you are feeling adventuresome call ranjan dey and have him cook you up a special meal  and enjoy
