You must really like living on the edge if you're talking about investing in airlines with the way the industry is currently going.

Are you expecting the price of jet fuel to drop very soon?  If there ever was a complete industry on the verge of collapse, this one is it.  LUV is still profitable for the moment anyway.  They were smart enough to hedge their fuel costs. At least it shows that their management was doing something besides collecting bonuses.   These hedges are going to eventually expire.  But who knows?  By then they may be the last airline left flying assuming there is no government bailout of the others, which I would not rule out.

In general, airlines are NOT a good investment, as they are unpredictable, heavily dependent on good management-union relations, and their profitability depends strongly on fuel costs.

Airlines go out of business (Aloha Airlines most recently...), and if they don't, they go bankrupt and restructure, which means that common stock holders are out of luck, because the debtholders get paid off first.

Me personally, I'm an advocate of value investing (finding great companies to invest in, buying them at the right price, and only selling when they get overvalued...).  Airlines, unfortunately, never fit into these categories -- they are too speculative, and therefore too risky to place your hard-earned money.
