  1. mays is the greatest ever to play the game

Babe ruth can pitch so he's good

ted williams can play the field better then aaron

mantle cause he has a good arm

  2. mays

    ruth

    aaron

    mantle

  3. Willie Mays vs. Cal Ripken Jr.

    AVG - Mays (.302 vs .276)

    OBP - Mays (.384 vs. .340)

SLG - Mays (.557 vs. .447)  Not even close.

For anybody not familiar with OPS+, it's a statistic that tells how good a player was in comparison to his contemporaries, good for judging players across eras.  Higher than 100 means the player was above average.

    OPS+ - Mays (156 vs. 112)

    Speed - Mays by far.

Defensively, the edge probably goes to Mays.  Ripken was no slouch, but Mays was amazing.

    Winner: Mays

    Joe DiMaggio vs. Babe Ruth

    AVG - Ruth (.325 vs. .342)

    OBP - Ruth (.398 vs. .474)

    SLG - Ruth (.579 vs. .690)

Neither was particularly speedy, but DiMaggio didn't get caught near as often, so advantage DiMaggio.

    OPS+ - Ruth (155 vs. 207)

Pitching - Ruth.  Obviously.  He had a 2.28 ERA (of course the league average at that time was 2.77, so 2.28 wasn't horribly impressive)

Fielding, I have absolutely no clue.  Draw.

Winner: Ruth.  DiMaggio had no chance.

    Hank Aaron vs. Ted Williams

    AVG - Williams (.305 vs. .344)

OBP - Williams (.374 vs. 482)  Williams is the career leader in OBP.

    SLG - Williams (.555 vs. .634)

Speed - Aaron.  Williams was never a base stealer.

    OPS+ - Williams (155 vs. 191)

    Fielding, no clue again.  Draw.

    Winner: Williams.

    Mickey Mantle vs. Albert Pujols

    AVG - Pujols (.298 vs. .333)

    OBP - Pujols (.421 vs. .423)

    SLG - Pujols (.557 vs. .620)

Speed  - Mantle.  Didn't steal a lot, got caught rarely.

    OPS+ - Mantle (172 vs. 168)

This one is very close, so I'll go by their 162 game averages.

              Mantle          Pujols

    AB       547              599              AB doesn't really matter.

    R         113              124

    H         163              200

    2B        23                44

    3B        5                  2

    HR       36                 41

    RBI      102               127

    SB       10                 6

    CS        3                  3

    BB       117              90

    SO       115              66

Huh, these two are pretty close.  Tough one.

Defense.  In my mind, Pujols is a better player defensively than Mantle, though I never saw Mantle play, obviously.  Pujols is a very underrated defensive player.

Winner: Pujols.  I could just as easily say Mantle, but Pujols is just a better contact hitter and still hits home runs at a similar pace.  I'm probably in the minority in this case

  4. mays

    the babe

    teddy ballgame

    the mick

  5. I'd take Mays over Ripkin, DiMaggio over Ruth, Aaron over Williams, and Mantle over Pujols. The reason that I chose these individuals is because they were better all around players than their competitor.

  6. Ripken Jr

    Ruth

    Aaron

    Mantle

  7. Mays

    Ruth

    Aaron

    Mantle

  8. ripken

    ruth

    aaron

    mantle

  9. The reason for picking these guys is simple

Willie Mays (3rd best player to ever play the game)

Babe Ruth (2nd best player to ever play the game)

Ted Williams (best player to ever play the game)

Mickey Mantle (the Mick and Pujols don't belong in the same sentance, no matter how good Pujols is)

EDIT: I can't believe how many people ae choosing Aaron over Williams.  It's not even close between those 2, Williams is the best player ever.

  10. Mays

    Ruth

    Williams

    Mantle

  11. Mays

    Ruth

    Williams

    Mantle

Out of these 4, I'll take Ruth as the best all around player.

  12. MAYS (GREATEST ALL AROUND PLAYER)

RUTH (HE HAS A CANDY BAR ON HIS NAME, WHAT MORE CAN YOU ASK FOR)

TED WILLIAMS (THE GREATEST PLAYER IN ONE OF THE GREATEST FRANCHISES OF ALL TIME)

KING ALBERT (HE IS THE "GREAT PUJOLS")
