Question:

Best alternative fuel source?

Since gasoline prices are going to crush the American economy, what would the best alternative fuel source? Hydrogen's pretty cheap, you'd just get like 5 miles to the gallon. Ethanol would be a NO. That'd just lead to massive corn famines and government regulation on how much gas we could use (or else), which would be communism. Nuclear power would be very effective, but there's always evil people who would harvest the materials for bombs. I heard fuel cells were very efficient and effective. What's your opinion?

  1. I don't know if it's the best, but I have 2 cars that run on natural gas (methane), and it's great! It's way cheaper than gasoline and burns much cleaner, too. It's also an American fuel, so no terrorists get bankrolled by me when I fill up. Plus, Ford knows how to make these cars already; it's not just a dream. They've been making them for years! Anyway, that's my vote - natural gas.

  2. cow p**p

  3. Cellulostic ethanol can take the most plentiful substance on earth and turn it into a useful product for transportation. You could take the majority of waste, anything made from plant fibers, and turn it into a form of energy.

Fuel Cells aren't an energy source. You take a large amount of energy from electricity to make hydrogen and oxygen, or you take a large amount of crude oil to make hydrogen and use oxygen from the air. Either way, you're spending energy to get energy, and the efficiency is low enough that you might as well be using batteries.

  4. The first response to your question may have some validity to it.  Water may be the best fuel source.  The Japanese have just invented an auto that does run on water.  They claim it can run an hour on a quart of water .  The story about this car was featured on Yahoo news a few days ago.

Perhaps with further development/research, a vehicle, generating electricity, heating your home may be accomplished by just using water.

It's something definitely worth while to see if it is a viable energy source.

  5. The Germans did the research on the theoretical limits of fuel cells and they believe they are practical only for large trucks or buses!

  6. The best is ethanol fuel !...

Also you can use it with DEFC (Direct Ethanol Fuel Cells)...

  7. Fossil fuel is the best even though they are robbing us. Drill  more and produce as much fossil fuels as possible is the only way to bring prices down.

  8. i definitely think water would be a good source, but I heard from somewhere that if we were to become dependent on water as fuel, then we would run out of water (don't know if this is true). BUT I believe the answer lies in variance. We should alternate between the different biofuels and other sources particularly ethanols and electricity. I also really think that the US should invest more money into butanol. In my opinion, butanol is the closest alternative to gasoline.

  9. Water.

  10. Waste Vegetable Oils.
