Best area & resort in Mexico for our first "Dad and Mom only" vacation?

Looking for at least a 4 star but do not want to pay big money...also looking for a smaller resort where you do not need to get a shuttle to the beach or bar!!! We are not real good at doing the relaxing thing...we like being on the go and we both like to shop so we need a resort with some good activities. I was thinking Maya Riviera area so we can be close to Cancun for shopping. Is the shopping good there?

Its our first vacation without the kids so we fear we may get bored!!! Also we will be going late June-Early July...any comments on the weather in Mexico then would be appreciated.

  1. The first thing that comes to mind when I hear "Dad and Mom only" is 'adults only'!  There are some great resorts in the Riviera Maya that cater to adults and couples. I would suggest the Royal in Playa del Carmen - it is directly on Playa del Carmen beach and is steps away from shopping. The food and accommodations here are amazing! And the resort is not too big - you can get everywhere on foot (comfortably)

If the Royal is out of the budget - you should consider a resort that has adult-only sections. At Sandos Playacar you can stay in a club room category that is ocean view and only allows adults in the section - there is an adult pool as well as other facilities.

  2. Hola.  Don't rule out Cabo.  We have some fantastic adult only resorts that are close to shopping and all the activities, not to mention all the activities and fun you can have right at the resort.  Mum and Dad might want to kick up their heels one night at a nightclub downtown, or have a great italian meal on a balcony overlooking the marina and arch as the sun sets behind it.  Very romantic.  You can get your money's worth staying at the Riu Sante Fe, or if you are willing to spend a few more dollars, treat yourself to the Royal Solaris or the Crowne Plaza in the more quaint and colonial town of San Jose del Cabo.  Everything is walking distance here....art galleries, great shopping, excellent restaurants, miles of sandy beach to stroll, golfing, etc.

Our weather is a little more drier than Cancun, since we are on the pacific side and less tropical, more desert.  You are going during prime hurricane season, so you have to keep this in mind.

  3. We love Moon Palace in Riviera Maya. Stay away from Puerto Vallarta. We went there in may and hated it. The ocean and beach was so nasty i would'nt even go in the water.

I know you said Mexico, but our favorite place is Punta Cana. I know you would love the caribbean. We stay at the Bavaro Princess.

  4. I stay at the Palace Resorts every time I travel to Cancun.  I have compared others, but I think they are the best.  They are a bit higher in price, but they are all inclusive.  For example, you can travel in June through August to one of their adults only resorts for 18 and older (no children allowed for the best relaxation) for about $2200  all inclusive.  Or, with the membership I mentioned above, a friend of mine stayed at the Mayan Palace Resort for under $600 for the week.  This was not all inclusive.

There are lots of shops along the Cancun strip that will keep you busy.  But don't go out at night unless you are with a large group of people.   I suggest shopping during the day only and staying inside your resort at night.

The very best place I have stayed was in Playa del Carmen at the Playacar Palace Resort.  http://www.dreamcancunresorts.com  for more info.    This five star hotel/resort is located right across from the island of Cozumel where you can take a ferry boat for even more shopping and to watch the cruise ships come in.  Right in Playa del Carmen are Mexican shops and the famous 5th Avenue shops.  With Palace Resorts you can hop on a shuttle and visit some of the other resorts as well.  They are truly 5 star.

The rainy season begins in June through November, and that's why the prices drop.  It is always hit or miss.  The sun can be out and it will be raining or sprinkling, but it only lasts for minutes.  If you hit during a tropical storm (or heaven forbid) a hurricane, then you will be facing a few days of rain but then the sun comes out.  There is rain even outside of the rainy season.  It's the tropics so expect tropical weather.

We have been there four times and have had very little rain.  We always go after June 1st.  We like early July the best.
