  1. I really think you can  find "Parisian city life" in ANY arrondissement in Paris. (although the 16e is a little TOO residential for my taste, and sorry, but I'm not that familiar with the 17e).

You will not need a car in Paris. The metro and bus systems are amazing and easy to use.  Plus there are always lots of grocery stores, pharmacies, bakeries, cafes/bars and laundromats in each arrondissement.  You might have to explore just a little to find the ones closest to your apartment--you'll very, very likely find something within walking distance.  Each arrondissement also has an open market on certain days of the week.

That said, I do think the quarters have different things to offer, besides just living conveniences.  Maybe check out a tourist guidebook with pictures to help you see what parts of each quarter look like, see what kind of nightlife there is, decide if you want to be near big or small parks, etc.  The lodgis website i listed for your apartment website question (http://www.lodgis.com ) usually has pics/descriptions of what the street looks like for each apartment so that can give you an idea too!  After all, different parts of each arrondissement vary.

I lived in the 11th near the Bastille which I found to be super busy and very loud, especially at night (all night) since there are lots of bars.

I also lived in the 6th ($$$ tiny apartment!!) which was still busy, but I liked it better because there was less traffic and I was in the Latin quarter and down the block from Luxembourg garden.

I know you want to be close to line A (yes it's really convenient).  But definitely don't let that limit where you think you should live.  Paris is a lot smaller than it may seem at first and it's usually easy to catch the metro to one of the stops along line A.

I hope this helps you a little.  I'm sorry I can't just choose one of the quarters you listed.
