Best bass guitar for groove/death/sludge metal?

My little bro wants a bass that'll play good stoner/sludge/groove/death metal type of music and I was wondering what a good bass for that would be. Please try and keep it under like 600 dollars.

an ernie ball bass will do ya good.

I think one of Dean's radical designs would suit it well.  Epiphone Flying V also, in Flat Black.  B.C. Rich if priced right and painted awesomely.
