I am going to Petco after work to buy bedding, food, and some chewing toys. Can you recommend the best kind/brand? Thanks a lot!

  1. CAREFRESH!

    it is apparently really good

    that's the kind I'm getting this week!

    good luck with your hamster

  2. In bedding I get my hamster Carefresh. And in food I get Vitakraft Menu. My hamster loves it. P.S. my hamster is a teddy bear hamster. Hope this helps.

  3. Defiantly carefresh!

    Not only is it super absorbent, but it also holds in odors and is more fun for burrowing animals than wood because, well, they can burrow! It also comes in different colors: pink, blue, brown and white.

    P.S its made out of recycled newspaper, so even bedding your pet can help save the world!

  4. For the bedding, avoid at all cost pine and cedar. Never ever go for pine or cedar for small rodents, it contains oils in there that can be harmful for their lungs.

    Depending on what is available in your area, go for one, or a mix of, the following:

    - aspen

    - hemp (what I used for my mice, LifeMate brand that I got at my local WalMart)

    I do not have any experience with carefresh, but if anything, you should stick to the natural carefresh and stay far far away from the colored or scented ones (who in their right mind would give chemically altered bedding to their small pets?).

  5. bedding- carefresh

    food- nutriphase

    chewing toys- anything with wood

    I don't know if they have these brands at petco though, they have them at petsmart.

  6. Bedding;

    Care Fresh or Healthy Pet is generally the best.  I have Healthy Pet, which claims to be the #1 bedding.  It is hypoallergenic (( you wouldn't believe how much that counts when you suddenly find yourself with a sick hammy and no real reasons as to why )), reduces odor, and is 3 times more absorbent than wood chips.  I bet Care Fresh is just the same.  (:

    Wood chips can also carry germs and diseases if not packages or treated properly.  It's less risky and less expensive to buy regular bedding.

    Healthy Pet is $20 for a large bag of bedding which should last up to perhaps two months.

    Food;

    I'm not really label savvy, but I buy whatever is in the red bag.  Haha, sorry.  Just compare the labels and look over the back to see the nutrients.

    BEWARE!!  If it is not what you normally, buy you will have to switch their food gradually!  By giving them their old food and half new food, etc.  Switching too quickly may make them sick and//or they may refuse to eat.

    Toys;

    I really don't understand why people BUY toys..  It's much easier to find things around your home.  Toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes cut down the middle will ensure your hammy won't get stuck and will still have the fun of walking through them.

    Empty cereal boxes and different sizes of tissue boxes (with the plastic insert removed) make good homes.

    Though I guess something wooden is best.  They do need the occasional wooden toy to help keep their teeth down more when just those cardboard things don't do it enough.

  7. DO NOT GET CAREFRESH BEDDING  my hamster got really bad allergies from it because it got into her throat she was very sick but now she is fine because she has ASPEN wood chucks

    and the food get Fiesta it has a lot of different stuff mixed in it. it is like a chex mix for a hamster

    PS. don't get pine or cedar wood chucks it can can make your hamster really sick also

    hope i helped   :-)
