Question:

Best bike for college?

Hi :]

I'd like to get a bike for college in the fall, to get around campus a little easier.

I was wondering what kinds are best.

I really like the look of the BMX-type bikes, but I don't know how they compare to other types of bikes in these situations. I would love to get one.

Any advice/suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

  1. Last time I was on campus NO ONE had a BMX. Lot's of cruiser, MTB, hybrids.

If you're smart you'll buy used and cheap but well maintained. Bikes do get nicked at school and being left outside a lot the weather beats them up a little too.

When I went to school I had a high end bike. left it at home and rode a beater road bike.

  2. Buy a used bike.

  3. Scrounge around garage sales or Thrift stores and buy a $15 road bike. Take off all the derailleur c**p and make it a one speed.  To do this, remove enough links from the chain to fit the front and rear sprockets.  Easy as pie.

  4. Whatever you buy, it *will* get stolen.  Or at least there will be an attempt, which will probably at least damage the bike.  Get the cheapest thing you can find.

  5. A folding bike would be good it you have a small room.  A dutch bike would be good if you plan on going grocery shopping and lugging transporting stuff around.  The latter is the best for easy transportation, and it's super comfy.  Check out this article for more on Dutch bikes and how awesome they are...

I just bought a Pashley Roadster Sovereign and it's unbelievable!  With a pannier I can do EVERYTHING on it.  Also, with the chain guard there's no need to worry about grease stains on your pants.  Also good in all weather conditions.

  6. schwinns are the best i think!
