  1. best going to an independant bike frame builder you will get a better deal and better service (i know from experience you can be seriously ripped off ). Plus you can get the bike built to your own spec

  2. The bicycle industry is very competitive.  At any given price point, you really aren't going to find too many differences between bikes at that price point.  The quality of the bikes and components on those bikes are going to be pretty comparable.  So, forget about brands.

The real difference is going to be in your perception of how the bike feels to you and how it suits your style of riding.  So, you need to get down to your local bike shop and ride a bunch of bikes.  Take several for an hour long ride and decide which feels best to you given how you want to ride.

If you want to get a bargain, you need to try to get one of last year's models.  As a bike shop sells out of its old stock, it will often put the last few bikes on closeout special.  Personally, I wouldn't take a bargain bike if it didn't fit right and feel good.

    Hope this helps.

  3. With that amount of money, I too recommend getting a last years bargain as local bike sops will want to replace stock. Giant XTC good

  4. ditto & ditto, to the other 2 answers, but with this to ad.. when the new model year bikes hit the shops, you may get a better deal on this years models. also, from time to time, shops change what brands they carry, and will run specials to get the old stock out..

  5. I agree with sfr1224, it is really tough to look for the right bike for you. I could only suggest that you use only one brand name in all your parts. Like if you buy a Shimano frame, then use Shimano brakes, rims, hubs, cranks, sprockets, etc. remember that they are factory designed and they are already matched. Then later on, you can start replacing parts with different brands.
