What kind of lock is best (i.e. tamper resistant, etc.) and what is the best way to lock up a bike (where do I put the lock to make it hard to get the bike loose)?

Thanks!

  1. like through the spokes. but you should also do it through a couple more holes.

  2. get the tires and the frame of the bike

  3. The ulocks are the best - ones with circular keys. Spend a bit more and get one with a guarantee.

I've had two bikes stolen in the last year- one was because I wasn't using a ulock - one was because I was using a cheap ulock with a simple key system.

  4. When You bike bring a back pack and get two kryptonite cords and two u locks. Use one cord to secure the bike frame and one to secure the frame and the rims and tie both cords to a bike post or a stairway.

Kryptonite cords are really burgalar proof. They have a thick rubber outside thick metal fiber things that come together like a rope and a thick piece of metal in the very center of it.

  5. the U shaped lock is a good one. pass it through both the frame and the front wheel and lock it to a railing or something.

  6. a masterlock one where its like a giant rubber wire and has 4 digit code to open

  7. The best kinds are the ones with the twist-code.

You wrap it twice, around the bike rack and the between the bars below the handlebars. :)

  8. tough sturdy lock, through the frame and any wheels that are quick release

  9. Most folks buy too much lock.  You definitely want a Kryptonite U-lock, but don't buy too big a lock - that can provide leverage for a thief to bust it open.  Get one that will fit snug when locked to where you will be locking the most.

The late Sheldon Brown recommended the following technique:

His site is awesome for cyclist information and it's for normal folks!

Basically, you put your U-lock around the back tire and around a pole - with the lock positioned within the triangle of the rear portion of the frame.  Well you have to see it.  I haven't quite mastered this technique yet.

I bring my U-Lock when I'm leaving the ride outdoors and unmonitored for extended periods.  I U-Lock the frame and then thread a cable lock through the tires.

Just to and from work, though - I don't carry a lock.  I leave my lock on the rack at work and lock my bike up at home in the garage.

  10. Doesn't matter what kind of lock you use. A thief really wants your bike, he's going to get it. Get what ever lock you can afford, perferably a long one that goes threw both tires, frame, and a light post or something. Your only going to slow a thief, not prevent a loss.

  11. gets a chain lock there the best and lock it once through the front wheel and once through the frame
