I just bought a 2001 ford escape (first car) and im looking to put a pair of subwoofers in it to enhance the bass, but im lost in that area.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what the best sub brands are? and do i have to get a whole new stereo system to have subwoofers put in, or can they work with the factory installed stereo? i normally plug my ipod in anyway.

  1. I agree with Memphis Audio choice.  The best subs aren't made by the big namebrand guys trying to sell their name.  When hooking subs to factory decks, its important that you get a high quality line output converter so they sound their best.

Spitzie makes a good point about powered subs.  I wouldn't get a bazooka tube, though.  Look at the Infinity Basslink or Basslink II if you go that route.

  2. hi shay. there are a lot of sub brands out there good and bad. it all depends on what you want out of them.

the best sub brands IMO are rockford fosgate, Fi, Re audio, focal, jl, dyna audio, image dynamics and a whole lot more.

you do not have to get a whole new stereo system to have subwoofers in your escape. manufacturers like SAS-Bazooka sell amplified subwoofers in a box or in a  tube to integrate with your factory installed stereo.

i think thats the way to go for you. no hassles of running a lot of wires and positioning the new amps. not unless thats what you want.

if you need more help just send me an IM or email me. i'd be glad to help you out.

  3. the best brand that you can buy at the stores is rockford fosgate or alpine. but if your looking for a little more bang for your buck you should go with jl audio. i have a 12w7 with a 500/1 in my car right now and whenever im about 200 feet away from any home the windows in the house start to shake.

  4. Best brand of subs ultimately will depend on what kind of bass you're looking for, how much power you're planning to run and what kind of budget you're looking for.

IMO ... FI, RE Audio, Image Dynamics, Digital Designs are all great sub manufacturers that you're probably not familiar with.

Of stuff that's more familiar out in the market  ... Rockford Fosgate, Kicker, Alpine, MTX, JL Audio all make good stuff overall.

Best thing to do is listen to a few subs in the market and pay particular attention to what kind of enclosure you'll want the subs to run from.  Sealed enclosures tend to have more accurate, tighter bass while ported enclosures hit harder, particularly around the frequency the enclosure is tuned to.  They are not as accurate ... but if it's the "boom" you want, ported is the way to go.

  5. In my opinion Kicker or Memphis Audio are the best. and you can just tap into the rear speakers, run it to a Hi/Lo converter and then to your amp. When you buy subs or an amp just go by RMS wattage, not peak wattage. also be careful with the oHm's. i bought an amp that output 4 ohms, so i thought i would get a sub that handled 4 ohms. wrong just whatever you choose i would go her to make sure it will wire up correctly.   http://www.crutchfield.com/learn/learnin...
