Best breed/ crossbreed for an eventer?

Hi!

My friend and I were debating this. I was thinking a warmblood/thoroughbred cross, because you need the warmblood movements for dressage, and the thoroughbred movements are good for cross-country and show-jumping.

Thanks!

  1. That actully sounds quite good. Make sure though that each horse your breeding is in great condition cause you want that to be passed threw to the foal. You can possibly find a horse or two already bred crossed like that. Sounds like a good horse to tryout.

  2. Anything can event!!! i personaly prefer either a pure warmblood, TB or a TB x. My faves for eventing must be TB's and TBxShire or TBxID (7/8 TB, 1/8 other lol). Then you have the movement for the dressage and the willingness to do anything you ask of them. I dont compete my warmbloods in eventing, only DR and maybe some SJ as i dont find them 'gutsey' or 'bold' enough for xc. They also run out of steam on the xc, and find it very hard work.

  3. If you want a really good Eventer get a good Irish Sport Horse which has thoroughbred blood. (8 times out of 10 a gelding, if you find a good mare hold on to her) - The ISH studbook tops the ranks for Eventing for the last 13 years.

  4. Arabian

  5. Irish Sport Horses, Trakehner / sport horse crosses

  6. Irish Draught x Thoroughbred.

  7. I always use Thoroughbread x Welsh because you need the bone for X-country but the agility of the TB.

I found the movement of the welsh perfect for dressage and the tall legs perfect for show jumping so there you have yur perfect X breed.

I use them and nearly always get placed.

  8. You should always have a little bit of TB in, because in jump offs, when speed is the key they are extreemly useful.

Warmbloods are excellent in dressage so yeah a TBx WB would be brilliant to excel in all three disiplines.

I'd suggest a Dutch Warmblood, as they have fantastic movements and train easily and well.
