Best budget hotels in Rome, Italy.?

Question

I am looking for a hotel in the city center and do not have much money to spend. Please help me find a hotel (not a hostel) that would fulfill my needs.Thank you.

Try the Hotel Tirreno.

It is in a small street about 10 min stroll from Termini Train station and 1/4 mile from the Colosseum. On the treet there is also an Irish pub and a great bakery.

Termini is a major transportation node in Rome from there you can pick up the metro, the buses, the train and taxis as well; buy an all day pass, it's about 7 euros and you can hop on and off the metro or buses as you wish for the whole day.

Also near the hotel is the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, another good meeting point  and also there is a grocery store nearby.

The hotel is very clean and reasonably priced.

Also, go on www.venere.com. This is the italian answer to Hotels.com. It offers all types of accomodation at a reduced price. Also, there are many comments on it from people that stayed at these hotels, very helpful if you want to know the "real" scoop.

Word of caution. Do not carry any valuables in your pockets. We were pick pocketed twice on buses and our digital camera was stolen right off of my husbands belt on a crowded metro. If the buses get crowded or are crowded before you get in, wait for the next ones you are much better off waiting 10 minutes than getting robbed.

At one point we actually stayed in a convent for two days.  It was super cheap and they rent the rooms out.  It also includes breakfast and was in the heart of the city.  I wish I could remember the name but if I find it I will contact you again.  Thanks!  -Cara
