Best cage for dwarf hamsters?

I am going to purchase a Cambell's Russian hamster. I know most of the cages in the store are for Syrians. Is there a cage you have, that is escape proof for dwarfs and are the bars small enough. If there is one at like pet smart or petco that i could get that would be even better.

I want a big one, not the 2 story those aren't safe.

not pricey

Preferibly the plastic/wire ones.

Thanks!

  1. i keep mine in a super pet crittertrail 2. a 3 would b better, but sadly i dont have acess to one where i live =[ the wire multi levels arent saafe, but the plastic ones are. good luck =]

  2. dwarf hamsters are sometimes hard to purchase cages for, but here are some ideas:

    tanks/aquariums-

10 gal is a little bit small, so i generally don't like them, 20 gal is a good size, aquariums can get costly though, and a 20 gal tank can cost about $40. i like tanks for dwarfs because sometimes they are small enough to fit through the wire cages, so for dwarfs, you might be better off with a tank, plus you don't have to deal with wire chewing all the time, the only downside is that sometimes the air flow isn't the greatest in tanks, but if u keep the hammy inside a room that’s around 50-80ºF your dwarf will be ok, also they are easy to clean

    bin cages-

bin cages are becoming more popular because of the price and size you can make them, the thing is, bin cages are made entirely by yourself, so there is no guarantee to their safety or inescapability, you make a bin cage from something like a rubbermaid container, and these are very cheap to make, plus you can choose the size you want to make them, some sites on making bin cages:

    complicated one:

    easy one:

    crittertail, other plastic cages:

i generally don't like crittertrail or habbitrail cages, they aren't great ESPCIALLY for dwarfs because they have difficulty climbing different levels or having to go up an down tubes, which is why i like bin cages and tanks because they are one level, they are expensive and hard to put together, they are also very cheaply made, and here’s an example of how easy there are to escape:

    wire cages:

if you really want a wire cage, then i recommend getting one that is made for mice, because the wire spacing will be smaller, and your dwarf won't escape, the only downside to these is that they ALWAYS makes these cages very small, so your hammy won't have much room to move around =\ here’s a decent cage:

  3. I think most of the cages made for syrians are way too small for them but are good size for dwarfs the crittertrails look like they 'ed be great.

  4. Get the critertrail playground or the habitrail OVO!! The playground comes with everything and is less costly as the OVO. The Ovo is nice and cool. It is more expensive but perfect for dwarfs. Im geting a hamster on Thursday (birthday). I havent had one in a couple years but am a hamster fanatic and know about them! Hope this helps. Get also the critertrail playground side toilet!! SO COOL! THe toilet comes with scented litter and a scoop!!! GOOGLE IT!

  5. most cages in pet stores are too small for syrian and dwarf hamsters. i personally hate crittertrails and habitrails and all those small cages unless they are connected to another cage.

I recommend a bin cage. they make really great cages and are ALOT cheaper than cages in petstores. all you have to do is buy a bin from walmart or k-mart or somewhere like that and either drill a bunch of holes in the lid or cut a hole in the lid and attach mesh. and you should get one that is about 15 or 20 gallons. or if you want alot of space get a 100 litre bin.

  6. go to petco and there are many different cages to choose from. you can even bring your hamster with you in a carrier cage and find the right one for yours. when i went there were different cages and i ended up eith a big cage that came with food and bedding and hay and treats and a bowl and water bottle for my guinea pig so who knows what you could get for your hamster.

  7. I have a dwarf hamster, and I have a Critter trail cage.On the front of the critter trail boxes they say what animals they are safe for , they all say safe for dwarf hamsters. The bars are quite close together. I'v ehad my hamster for 7 or8 mounths, and he hasn't escaped at all! These cages are also good because they come with a wheel, a waterbottle, and a food dish. You can also buy expansion packs and tubes and make crazy costom desings. The tubes are not to big, my dwaarf hamster has NO problem what so ever trying to climb them. The plasic doesnot break very easily, but you still have to be careful.Good luck with your new dwarf hamster!!!=)

P.S Most critter trail cages cos 25 to 50 dollars(in canada)

  8. what ever kind of cage u get, make sure u get either habitrail OVO or any type of crittertrail. those are the best and coolest cages in my opinion.
