  1. Do you have adequate lighting? I'd be more worried about the lighting gear than your camera. You can take great pictures using a point-and-shoot camera with studio lighting. I'd invest in a quality flash unit, any basic DSLR, and a prime lens.

  2. The best camera for a photo shoot is one that you can afford and can handle with confidence and ease.

  3. I have a Canon EOS 40D  it works perfect i like the big ones cause if your taking fast shots i would consider it

  4. You need to tell us your budget? My friend currently uses EOS-1Ds Mark III by Canon

It is amazing in terms of professional picture quality but the price is steep at $7999US

If you want something a bit cheaper but is very good in terms of professional use I would suggest the Canon EOS Rebel XSi http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contro... at  $799.99US

  5. Besides renting a camera from samy's camera located in mid-Fairfax in L.A. in order to fulfill your photo shoot, here's my recommendation.

The all time winner bargain compact digital camera is the Canon 7.1 megapixel PowerShot SD1000 [not the IS] 7.1  with an added  2- gig memory card which when set in the manual mode for "Vivid" colors and videos at 30 fps in 320 dpi format provides killer images and videos.  It currently sells for $160 at Sears:

    Good luck!

  6. I would suggest you buy one that uses the same lenses you have been using that broke.

We really need to know a little about the subject of your shoot.

If fashion or an event of some type, then the 18-55 mm lens sold with the entry level Nikon's and Canon's will be fine ... if architectural, then you will need a super wide angle zoom, like the Nikon 12-24 mm or Canon 10-20 mm.  If sports, something like the 70-300 mm zoom may be more appropriate.
