  1. Mine love Fancy Feast and they are not fat.  The reason I don't feed my cat Iams and other so called healthy cat food brands are because of the cat food scare of a few months ago.  You can research where the companies buy their products for the cat food.  I will not buy any product that has ingredients from China, that will be digested by me or my pets.  As far as that goes Mexico is included.  If your cats are gaining weight, maybe some play time is in order.

  2. There are a lot of good and relatively expensive wet foods for cats. We all want our cats to be healthy and thrive, but there is a practical side to my choice for my two (soon to be three!) kitties.

I use Fancy Feast because it has an very good nutritional breakdown and is readily available in most stores. And my cats love it! I buy it at Sam's Club in 36 can packs and it costs about 50c a can. Each cat gets one can a day and then they get a portion of dry food--I use Royal Canin Indoor #37; it is expensive but I don't think dry food is the place to be cheap.

Good luck with your kitties. I think it is important to regulate how much food your cat takes every day other wise they just eat when they are bored and get fat.

  3. There's no single answer.  There are actually a good number of healthy canned foods out there.

What makes them healthy is first and foremost the fact that they are grainless.  Grainless means low carb which means species appropriate which means weight management.

Another thing that makes them healthy is the lack of inferior, filler-type ingredients, and of course no carcinogens.  You'd be surprised to find that there are some so-called "premium" brands that still use known carcinogens such as BHA/BHT or Ethoxyquin.  Less noxious but still irrelevant to cat food is the presence of rice - brown or white.

Some examples of good foods can be found here:  What to feed:

In addition, one or two new brands have come out since that list was compiled.  One example is Merrick's B.G. line (Before Grains).  This is a good brand although it's not complete and balanced.  Evo also has a new line called 95% Meat.

I personally use both Nature's Variety Instincts and Wellness.

  4. I feed my kitten Natural Balance. She loves it and the ingredients in it are great. No by-products, corn or wheat gluten.

  5. Whenever I feed canned food, I always reach for the Wellness brand. They're formulas are grain-free and contain nothing but high quality meat and a wealth of fruits and vegetables. My cat loves it, especially wellness chicken and herring.   Felidae cat and kitten dry food and fresh raw meat are the two foods that are ushually on the menu for Sprinkles though. You can find wellness at petco.

I used to feed my cat Fancy feast fish in shrimp on occasion because I saw no by products, but since then my knowledge has improved even more, and I saw that it had sodium nitrate in it which is bad for humans so I don't want my cat eating that.

  6. Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. It's completely species inappropriate.

All small domestic cats descended from desert cats. In the wild, desert cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they don't need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. Additionally water was usually not available to them in their desert climate. So they do not often drink water. Regular ol' house cats have descended from those same wild desert cats.

So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl.

Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, allergies, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), bladder stones, kidney stones,  urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions.

Overall,  wet is all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs. Kibble meets our needs… not our cats.

I recommend varying the diet with a constant rotation of accepted canned foods that your cat enjoys. If you do this, and allow your cat the same assortment they would have in nature when eating mice, bugs, birds and rabbits, your cats’ digestive system won't be so sensitive and you won't have to run around looking for a specific brand when your store is out. You will have a nice variety to choose from instead.

Canned foods I recommend for your rotation:

    By Nature Organics - http://www.bynaturepetfoods.com/productp...

  7. My cats eat Wellness canned cat food & they are a perfect weight.

  8. I like Sheba and pet promise.

  9. I feed what nature intended them to get. On both the dog and the cats

"prey model" or "raw feeding". There are so many health benefits it's worth looking into. I know we all are enjoying this way of feeding.
