Hi, I'm about to start a 3 year course at university studying aviation and am wondering, after I have finished university, would airlines in Australia want me as a pilot? Or would i have to earn more hours in order to be a good option? Any advice on what I should/could do after completing flight school/university would be greatly appreciated.

:-)

  1. Ok, I only have my private pilots license.  Typically if you go to college for flight training and earn all your stuff their so when you graduate you will be ready to be an airline pilot.

When I was doing research on this matter when I took flight training with a Bachelors and all your flight training you could easily start off as a flight engineer.  You never start off as a pilot.  My advice to you would be graduate and get a job.  If you can make co-pilot cool, but go for the low end and work your way up.

  2. Sorry mate, but you probably won't be in the running for an airline job in Australia or anywhere else straight out of University unless it is a non-flying position. It's going to take you at least a few years of other flying experience before you'll be competetive with other applicants. With low flight hours there aren't many job opportunities available, particularly in multi-engine aircraft, so you'll just have to take what you can find at the time. Obviously you want to get turbine and multi-engine experience to be "airline material",  but ALL flight experience is beneficial (instructing, sight seeing tours, etc.), so don't turn your nose up at a job prospect just because it isn't in a place, in the equipment, or at the pay rate you were hoping for.  You can't afford to be too picky. Some people do manage to find the "fast track", but most don't. Good luck.
