  1. mc donalds

  2. PAPAYAS HONEY

  3. Applebees

  4. Try eating at restaurants that aren't chain ones.  Some of the best places I ate at when I was there, were little family ones that you stumble on while walking around.  So I can't give you any specific names.  There was one place that you can try that was kinda cool and I ran into a celebrity when I was there, was a place called Ellen's Diner.  It was about 15 years ago, so I don't remember the address, but you could ask the hotel conceirge or the cab driver.  Also, if you love cheesecake--go to Lindy's.  Have fun!  NYC is awesome!

  5. Checkout this blog. It's about lunch in midtown, but a lot of the places are open in the evenings.

Also try menupages.com. They have thousands of menus on-line, you can search by area and type of food. Then you can see what they have to offer.

Also, don't be afraid to take the family on the subway and go someplace that is out of midtown.

  6. Brooklyn Diner on 42nd St is awesome! We went to New York this time last year and went there for breakfast on a few occasions. I wouldn't say it's really cheap but definitely good value for money. The pecan and cinnamon french toast was tops! If you don't mind venturing up to the Upper West Side, Dinosaur BBQ on 131st is v. cheap and you get loads of really good food. Just try and book if you can, there can be a wait.

  7. Heartland Brewery.  the food is great for the whole family and the service is great!

  8. Island Burgers and Shakes (Ninth Avenue and 51st Street) - very small storefront with a limited menu - excellent very big burgers and chicken sandwiches with different toppings.

West 32nd Street between Fifth Avenue and Broadway has more than a dozen Korean restaurants.  Some of them serve very delicious inexpensive lunches - almost all restaurants have their menus posted outside.  They all serve meals with little dishes of various "appetizers" at no extra charge. [to save money, eat your big meal at lunch and eat lightly at dinner - you can get some wonderful bargains at lunch]

A pleasant experience at Todai (dinner - lunch is cheaper, but they don't have the same variety they have at dinner) - it's an all you can eat Japanese restaurant - good food - sushi made to order, more than a dozen shrimp dishes, crab, scallops, salmon, swordfish meats, soups, fresh fruit table, dessert table.  Look over the menu

For a real New York experience, go to Katz's Deli on the Lower East Side.  Sit in the self-service section - not waiter service.  You go to the counter and get your own sandwiches - tip the counter man a dollar or two when you order - you'll get a bigger sandwich than if the waiter brings it to you.  The sandwiches are big enough to share (no charge for sharing if you serve yourself) - best corned beef and pastrami you've ever had.

My favorite Mexican restaurant is on Tenth Avenue and 47th Street - authentic Mexican food from the Puebla region of Mexico - huge portions-very inexpensive- dishes are served with fresh tortillas and rice and beans or salads.  The place is very plain, but very clean.  The waitresses are very pleasant, but they're slow.

La Bonne Soup on West 55th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues has good food at very reasonable prices (the onion soup is great!)

Don't eat in Times Square restaurants - walk over to Eighth and Ninth Avenues - lots of good reasonably priced restaurants that feed neighborhood people - not tourists (the tourist restaurants know the people aren't coming back, so the food doesn't have to be that good).

Go down to the East Village - lots of very good, very inexpensive ethnic restaurants - try something you've never had before.  Try an order of fries at Pommes Frites - fries with various toppings is all they serve - they're delicious.

The restaurants in Chinatown are great!

    Enjoy your stay!

  9. BBQ's

    trust me!!!

  10. Comfort Diner located at 214 E, 45 Street, between Second and Third Avenues or Cafe Centro located at Grand Central Station.
