Question:

Best chess book for me?

I have recently become very interested in the game of chess, and I am looking for a good book that will improve my game. I read "Chess for Dummies," which did help a little--learning basic elements of the game(creating space for pieces, centralizing your game, etc.) I did buy Vukovic's "Art of Attack" but it seems like it may be a bit over my head. Which books would be a good fit for me?

  1. "Modern Ideas In Chess - by larry evans --- not sure you can find the original edition, but L/E was a terrific player in the day of Fischer and Nimsovitch - you will want to relearn some of the basics and fine tune your game by working out the examples in this fascinating book.  You would be surprised how much Mate in  3 moves and mate in 4 moves chess problems are for your end-game skills.

  2. Bobby Fisher teaches chess

  3. Try Yasser Seirawan's series. He's written books about openings, tactics, strategies, endgames, and more. They're very readable but still help even experts.

  4. Susan Polgar's Chess Tactics For Champions is my favorite.  You can find it at http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksea...

I have many chess books and many are just plain hard to follow.  But Chess Tactics For Champions is a really fun book!  My game improved dramatically after I had only read the first 10 or so pages!!!  She shows how to create forks, skewers and pins brilliantly.

Beginning Chess by Bruce Pandolfini is another excellent book and is easy to work with.  http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Beginni...

The nice thing about Beginning Chess is that it is a workbook and rates you as you work through it.  You can go back through it again and again and watch your rating improve.  Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess was my favorite for a long time but then I found Beginning Chess and I think it is a much better book with more thorough explanations.

Good luck! I hope this helped.  "Castle early!"

  5. the count of monte cristo. lol

  6. try a local barnes and noble.

  7. You must be a real dummy if Chees for Dummies didn't work for you! I'd go for Cheese for Dummies. GO CHEESE!
