Question:

Best cities in Australia?

I am going to Australia this summer because we are going to move out there in a few years. We are visiting Syndey, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairnes.

I was wondering which city people found the best to visit and also to live in.

Any comment would be great

Thanks.

  1. The Cold Coast is the best for sure, its about an hour drive, or train ride from brisbane. Its got the whole laidback beach lifestyle with some city a suburb living mixed in, it's impossible not to love it here.

  2. Firstly, you have made the right choice to live in a city. I have visited all these places and lived in two of them. Here are some points I noted about the places:

    Melbourne:

The most European of the Australian cities. It's very sprawling and the suburbs seem to go on forever. The suburbs are spacious and the houses are generally nice. The city has a business district and port and what appears to have a high amount of industry. The city is very nice with lots of colonial style buildings. The place has a good buzz to it and there always seems to be something going on. They are mad into sports in Melbourne, particularly the AFL (aussie rules). The weather is very unpredictable in Melbourne. There are no really good beaches here, the place seems to be about arts and culture. A great standard of living.

    Sydney:

The best of the Australian cities in my opinion. The harbor is spectacular and you are never far from a beach. Lots of the houses are big and spacious (compared to other cities) There's a real outdoor feel to the place, especially with so many events taking place in and around the harbour (There is always something on) The weather is good here, with hot summers and mild winters. The main problem with Syd is expensive houses. There's a great optimism to this city.

    Brisbane:

It seems a bit old fashioned to me. The city center is nice enough with old style buildings and a main pedestrianised area. Lots of the infrastructure seem to be 70's style. They have a nice area down by the river with walkways and cafes. I wouldn't recommend living here though, there's just not a lot you can say about the place!

    Cairns:

Seems to be booming, with lots of new houses going up. The population is small here and it has more of a country town feel rather than city. It is very humid! which would put me off living there. There are jellyfish in the sea for up to six months a year, meaning no swimming. Lovely place to visit though.

    Perth:

Its very clean and very spacious. There are excellent beaches everywhere and the weather is very hot (often reaching 40) All shops close here in evenings and weekends. Perth people do not believe in being overworked (quite right too!) The problem I have is that is just seemed a bit dead, there being not much in the way of entertainment and a general feel that this place is for retired people. Visually stunning but thats all!

  3. You are talking a visit in June July or Aug?  As this is Australian winter

    Sydney and Melbourne are cold

    Brisbane Chilly

And Cairnes  is likely their nicest time of the year

I live and work in Brisbane and really love it --what do you like doing on holidays might help us to guide you in what great hideaway places not to miss!

  4. perth melbourne and adelaide

    sydney is too high crime.

  5. for me it's sydney. so much things to see and do there. checked in once at Sovereign Inn Sydney. really has a nice view of the Harbour Bridge. been a fan of this hotel since it doesn't too much staying there. plus it's convenient for me since establishments that i need for business and leisure are within reach.

i also tried blue mountains. i must say that it's really wonderful there. A town that has so much to offer to everyone. Especially between months of july and september where the town celebrate Christmas in July. stayed at Katoomba Mountain Lodge. Budget motel but offers nice accommodation.

Both Sydney and Blue Mountains gave me a beautiful experience in the Land Down Under.

  6. i live in the states, but i have a lot of family in Australia. mostly in Sydney and in Perth, Ive been to both multiple times and my favorite is Perth, but that is pretty much on the opposite side of the country then Sydney.

Sydney is nice to, cause their are lots of suburbs and stuff right outside of the city and the actual city is really exciting itself.
