  1. Coal without any Sulfur content could be used.

    However you would be better off with Local Charcoal.

    Charcoal is a renewable resource that comes from trees rather than the limited resource that dug up out of mines in the ground.

    My preference is fruit wood like apple, but hickory and oak work as well.


  2. Lava rocks don't burn, you only put them into a gas barbecue but the gas is what burns.  You're thinking of charcoal briquets, which are really not coal at all.
