  1. This might help:-

  2. Consider Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY.  The school itself is located right outside of Albany, and about 2-3 hours from both New York City and Boston.  It's on the smaller side, and definitely not a big "party school," so it may not be for everybody.  They have a solid reputation in just about every field of engineering, although I'm not sure they have petroleum engineering, and many famous engineers have graduated from there, including:

Washington Roebling, builder of the Brooklyn Bridge

George Ferris, inventor of the Ferris Wheel

    Jack Swigert, Apollo 13 astronaut

    George Low, former NASA administrator

(don't ask how I have these memorized)

Good luck in your college search.  Don't forget to look into the US News and World Reports rankings, those are very helpful.

  3. Colleges grant technician and techologist diplomas.

If you want an engineering degree, you'll need to look up Universities.

  4. According to USNews, which does college rankings every year, here are the rankings for engineering in general:

    For universities with doctoral programs:

    Rank/School Peer

    assessment

    score

    ( 5.0 = highest)

    1.  Massachusetts Inst. of Technology  4.9

    2.  Stanford University (CA)  4.7

    2.  University of California–Berkeley *  4.7

    For schools without doctoral programs:

    Rank/School Peer

    assessment

    score

    ( 5.0 = highest)

    1.  Harvey Mudd College (CA)  4.5

    1.  Rose-Hulman Inst. of Tech. (IN)  4.5

    3.  Cooper Union (NY)  4.2

    4.  Cal Poly–San Luis Obispo *  4.0

However, I don't think any of these will apply to petroleum engineering at the bachelor's level.  Stanford only offers it at the graduate level.  Off the top of my head, some of the top petroleum engineering schools are UT Austin, Texas A&M, U of Oklahoma, U of Tulsa...

Check out the link below to see more details about particular majors.

  5. I went to the University of X and studied in their College of Engineering. I have a bachelors of science in Civil Engineering.

As to finding out which is the best, I'm not really sure. I applied for the best two closest to my home. I determined which were the best by emailing engineering firms and asking which schools they prefer to hire from.
