Question:

Best color to paint a house?

I'm looking for something classic. I was thinking a New Hampshire style blue with white trim but a couple people have said that's not modern anymore. The neighbors to both sides of me have beautiful subdued green homes and the one across the way has a beautiful taupe/brown. Our roof is brown and we have some brick on the front so the color has to match both.

Thanks!

  1. Try this online paint-a-home programme from Better homes, you can designate the colour of the roof, trim etc and a style that is close to your home so you have a good idea of what looks good, I love it because some idiot painted the roof on my house green and I had no idea how to paint the house until I tried this.  (think you have to register 1st)

  2. Pink, shown in the color code is most soothing.

  3. Depending on the basic tone of your brick which I am assuming is the standard red variety, you can push your roof to marry with the brick by the careful use of a body color. Think about your home in its entirety and the importance of creating a strong focal point with perhaps a secondary point(s) of interest. You've got a lot of things going on already...brick, siding, trim, roof, front door. I like the idea of a blue if it is an appropriate one. Blue is opposite on the color wheel from russet, and red-orange browns so it can be a great foil for the brick work on your facade. Some blues I'd recommend would be Benjamin Moore's HC-145 Van Courtland Blue, 2135-40 Province Blue, and 2136-40 Aegean Teal. These are all "warmer" blues which will look good with your roof, brick and the mortar in your brick. Stay away from blues with red undertones.

As far as trim goes, let's not create another color field on your house so let's choose a color which will create minimal contrast between the brick and/or siding. Try keeping in the reddish brown colors for trim, this will help integrate your windows into the facade rather than making them stand forward of it. Remember you have a lot of motion on the house already...try these 2109-30 Brown Tar or HC-70 Van Buren Brown.

Don't depend on your computer monitor for evaluating these colors, go get the paint chips to be sure. Good luck!

  4. if you really want a classic, try the white color. classic yet elegant. you won't find it hard to mix and match colors with white, basically, everything blends perfectly with that color. and one more thing, your house will look larger than it's actual size because white brings an illusion ro our eyes that would make the room larger.

  5. See if there is a common color in both the brick and the roof if you want a darker color.  I'd suggest something that goes with the roof but highlights the brick since that can be a great focal point.

I'd stay away from blue as the main color due to the roof being brown.  And there is nothing wrong with white and then using a stronger/darker color for your trim and maybe sneak a richer color in for a little pop!  Paint your front door a nice warm welcoming color and add some "accessories" in a brass tone to give it a little sparkle.  House numbers, outdoor light fixtures, mail box, door hardware all in one metal will make it look put together.

Even a light gray might be pretty, depending on the roof and the colors in your brick.  Gray doesn't have to be cold, there are warmer toned grays that just might work for you.  Then you could go with the white trim and pick your accent color from there!

    Good Luck!

  6. play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" homes look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think a color like like "carmel" (# 2921) would look terrific with trim painted a cream like "roycroft vellum" (# 2833).

You can also take a photo of your house & upload it to the makeover gallery on Roomvues dot com:

You can get color suggestions & they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.

  7. NOT yellow!!

  8. why dont you try neutral or earth tones like browns, tans, grays, greens, blues and some reds.. it might go great with your preferred scheme.. ^_^
