  1. coal mines can be situated anywhere on earth some start on land and continue under the ocean, another example could be to carbon rich coal as it's worth more economicly and power output, & finally areas rich in million year old tropical jungles which have had time to condense organic componds into carbon rich coal

  2. Okay, according to my dad;

    Not near a village

    Not in a National Park

    Not in a country where vast quantities of coal aren't needed and where it costs a lot to transport it to where they do (e.g Africa)

    Where the largest amount of coal is (because it costs so much to mine there's no point digging for a few 100g)

    Where it's not going to effect the environment around it to greatly.

    Where there is enough space to build a place for your workers to live and to build a plant.

    Where there is easy and efficient access by boat, road or rail -preferably rail.

    I reckon they'll just give us a map and say "put an x where you think Llylln Rrhoodids from Llan-somewhere should start digging"

  3. barges are the cheapest way to transport a heavy, bulky commodity like coal. So near some sort of river/canal/port would help out.

    You also need a market to sell the coal. So near somewhere with demand, say near a power plant.

    An area such as Wyoming in the USA is good because the coal is shallow and flat. Coal in the NW USA is commonly steeply dipping and folded so that to mine it you need to dig more and a given mine will only be able to extract a small portion of the dismembered coal seam.
