Hi,

I'm Christian and I'm from Soest, Germany. I'm 15 years old and I want to make a exchange year in the USA when I'm 17 years old.

In year 11 of school I want to make a year abroad in the USA. I'm searching for a country, where I can learn a lot things of the American culture, festivals, people etc. Moreover living shouldn't be as expensive as in New York...

Thank you! :-)

Sorry for my bad English ;-)

P.S.: I prefer a climate like in California ;-)

  1. Hmmm, I would say the more specific you are in terms of what you're looking for, the better off a chance of finding the right place in America and I don't think you're being specific enough.

America's a very disparate place and except for a cosmopolitan city like New York, Chicago, Philly or Minneapolis, you're not going to be able to learn all of American culture. The Northeast, the Deep South (by which I mean SE), the Midwest, the West Coast, and the Rocky Mountains all have different culutres that are very different from each other. So, i would say you've got about 5 regions. The area between the Northeast is the mid-atlantic which is a fairly nuetral place with less of a distinct culture of it's own. They have cities like Baltimore and Washington D.C. which might suit you well.

In terms of the question of whether you want a big city or a rural area, which is a big part of what your decision might eventually come down to, I think you probably want to try a suburb. It's a uniquely American phenonemon, and those places have the least crime and best education and a lot of well-rounded citizens. It's far away enough from the city that you have some breathing room, and it should be cheaper.

So for example, if you're thinking of moving to Chicago, you would probably end up living in a place you've never heard before like Evanstown or Glenbrook that's near the city.

I think South Florida and the Miami area is an incredibly interesting part of America with a lot of divergent cultures, but then again, that might give you more of an idea of what Latin America is like and that has hot climate.

Florida's not really part of the south though

Perhaps, you might also like St. Louis, Missourri. That's a very nice city.

If you like California, why not just try California.

  2. Do you mean country or state because there is only one country called USA.  You could go to Canada but Canada is its own country too.  You're from Germany- is there more then one country called Germany?  Maybe back in the 80s in the cold war  where there was East and West Germany.  I just b****h-slapped you with some knowledge.  You need to stop smoking weed and read a book.

  3. then go to BC in Canada (good weather condition, as you like California) or Australia.. I imagine they should be the nearest countries to USA in terms of culture...
