Seriously, nationalities and teams aside.... who do you think is the best F1 driver right now.

In my opinion it is Alonso and Barrichello comes in second.

Cheers!

  1. In my opinion, it comes down to four people:

Kimi Räikkönen was the World Champion of last year, and you can't deny his many wins. However, now in fourth place in the Championship and having had a few bleak races over the last few weeks he seems to be slipping.

Felipe Massa is similar. He has a great talent for driving and has been the victor many times but also seems to not be doing as well as he could - he came 4th in the Canadian GP.

Lewis Hamilton is my favourite driver, partly for England and partly because of his amazing driving talent and formidable wins over the last couple of years. He has had a pretty bleak 2008 season, but I still feel there's time to come back.

Robert Kubica is a new threat, and has made himself very present. He stole the title of current World Champion from Hamilton in the Canada GP only a few days ago, and his team is now 3 points away from the top in the Constructor's Championship. He has wonderful talent and has certainly proved himself, especially in Canada where, in 2007, he suffered a major collision. Now, he reigns supreme!

I can't really pick one driver, because so many things could happen over the next few races. We're not even half way into the season yet!

  2. im a kimi fan but i have to agree with you!

  3. Kubica. With his car he is doing wonders.

Hamilton may be good, but he has an awesome car so we can't say.

Alonso is Schumacer II (ie needs his whole team behind him and a good car, otherwise he chokes). He has the underlying skill, but is too much of a whinger for his own good.

I'd say Kubica, Webber, Hamilton. Massa close 4th.

  4. I agree with everything that's been said but everyone always forgets Mark Webber. He is far and away the most underrated F1 driver in recent memory.

Alonso is arguably the best driver. He has a tendency to get a little heated and drive with his heart and not his head, but he's much better about that nowadays!

Kimi is a very close second. When everything is right, he is untouchable. He is without a doubt the fastest driver in the field. His car control is beautiful to watch, he's an artist.

  5. definately NOT Alonso

eventhough all your arguments are saying that he only makes mistakes becuase he pushes his 'bad' car too far, but that's what a good F1 driver is he knows where his car's limits are and sticks to them... Also the way he treated McLaren make him a bad driver, a driver is a team player, he hurt Hamilton by his actions and thus is not a good driver...

Raikkonen is making bad use of a good car... he should be doing a lot better and I mean look at the table...

Therefore Kubica is the best at the moment, I mean cmon he is amazing without him I have no doubt that BMW would be so much worse than McLaren right now...

Also you're saying Hamilton makes unforced errors, fair enough but I mean he is a rookie and I know the question was CURRENT so yeah I reckon in a few years he'll be the best

  6. Alonso is the best driver by quite a long way. He's been the best since the end of 2005, and he's working miracles with a rubbish Renault this season. However he is a driver who needs to be "cuddled" and it's probably his biggest weakness; last year he experienced the "Ron" effect, as previously documented by Lauda, Prost, Coulthard and Montoya, which is what brought him back towards Hamilton as he felt badly let down by his team and this affected his performances.

  7. Kimi Raikkonen. He's one who's got determination and he never gives up. Even with a half decent car, he can make the most out of it. He doesn't let himself be affected by what people are saying about him. He just goes out to the track and do his best.

  8. I think the top F1 driver is Kimi Raikonen followed by Alonso then Kubica.

  9. for sure the best are 2:kimi raikkonen and ferni alonso!!!maybe the 2009 ferrari team!!!

  10. Alonso. He's doing a great job with that Renault qualifying in the top ten when his teammate Half-Nelson can barely even keep up with the Force India cars.  Kubica is also doing real well keeping up with the red and silver cars without losing his cool. I don't think he's made as many mistakes as Lewis, Kimi or Massa this year.

  11. Regulars will know i'm not his biggest fan but, without a doubt,  Alonso has seriously impressed me this season. He is coming into his own and knuckling down and been guilty of some superb driving this season so far.

The storied ofhim sacking off to Ferrari sadden me, it would be great to see him sticking with Renault and making them great.

Trulli, I have always liked since he led with such assurance in the dire Prost-Peugeot at the A1 Ring in '97 (may need to check that) and won with chutzpah in Monaco 4yrs ago. He is frustrating as he can be brilliant and awful in equal measure but  I admire his gusto.

  12. I would say Kubica.

He's showing outstanding achievement, and great speed in a car that isn't actually all that quick.

Hamilton doesn't do it for me. He's been groomed by Ron Dennis and his McLaren cronies since the age of five.

Raikkonnen? Although I'm a Ferrari fan, he doesn't show enough determination and guts for me.

So yeah- Kubica for me. He's young, talented, and he's determined.

  13. A true formula one driver has grace, a TRUE FORMULA ONE driver doesn't play the I have one two world chamiponships I am supposed to be treated best, that is why my vote isn't on Alonso.  Kimi is the fricken kewlest guy ever, cuz he doesn't care, he just drives.  Sorry, but my heart is on Hamilton too....but ultimately i have an undying loyalty to my FIN, KIMI!!!!  HE the bomb with his attitude and driving style!!!!

  14. Alonso by a wide margin.

He is overachieving in the Renault.  Given time, he could probably make them contenders again with his development skill.  Alonso doesn't make as many mistakes, the ones he does make often happen when he has to push his uncompetitive car.

Raikkonen sometimes looks out of it.  He has the fastest car this year and thrown away pts (2 of the losses were down to his lunatic driving).  If Schumi or Prost had Kimi's Ferrari this year, the championship would be over!  Now Kimi trails Massa.

Massa and Hamilton also make unforced errors in fast cars, while Kubica is overachieving in a slower car.  Based on this year's results so far, I'd say Kubica might be second best.

  15. I believe Kubica is the best current F1 driver because he keeps quiet about all the controversy going on in F1 but it is so clinical when racing on the track.

Second, it has to be Hamilton - in his first season coming 2nd. who else has done that?

  16. Well... I think that it's Kimi. He never gives up and he's seriously very fast on the right days! Heikki's very impressive too, maybe doesn't stand out much at the moment but I still think he's good.

  17. I think on his good days, Kimi is the best.  He is incredibly fast and drives well under pressure.  However, a big part of F1 is working with the car, constantly trying to make it better.  I don't think Kimi does that as much as Alonso.  Alonso is making huge strides at Renault and I think next year (if he doesn't move to Ferrari!) he will be an even bigger contender.  I also really like Massa, but I'm not sure he has what it takes to stay on top.  He can be inconsistent.  Kubica is really coming along, he works with his car and his team and really deserved to win Canada.  I look forward to watching him battle to stay in first in the championship.

  18. I would say

    1. Alonso

    2. Hamilton/Raikkonen (Kimi could be better if he could repeat his better days every weekend... Lewis is definitely the new star)

    3. Robert Kubica (shades of Schumi... those quali laps come out of nowhere... plus he can turn on when he wants to...

    4. Rubens Barrichello... experience counts for so much... good overtaking... tactics... etc.

    5. Felipe Massa - bucked his ideas up... INCREDIBLY fast....

    6. Jenson Button - experienced and smooth

  19. I don't think i could choose one at the moment as you have Alonso (double world champion) not that I'm too fond of him but he is a phenomenal driver.

Kimi (reigning champ) i have to admit my thoughts on Kimi have changed dramatically this year, he really is proving himself especially the way he didn't go into one on Lewis) and i like him now.

Lewis, he will be champ and i don't think it would matter what car he's in he would bring it in the top 5. At the moment he's going through what most drivers go through (a spot of bad luck),

Barrichello has still got it in him but i would have to say the brat pack -  Lewis, Robert, Heiki and Nico are our future major competition

  20. Nobody has mentioned DC... He's definately one of the best.

But Heidfield, Webber, Button, Trulli and even Sato are wayyyy underated, as is DC. If they had good, consistently finishing cars, they could do well. It's just that DC needs to calm down and Sato needs to get more aggresive. Button just needs a top running car. He's always been in an unlucky situation when it comes to cars. Heidfield also needs a good car. Lately, he's had one. Trulli needs to eventually skip out of leading the middle of the pack. He needs to get in the front.

But I agree, Alonso is probably the best. The way he drives like no one else, and creates his own lines. Way to go. Kimi, Hamilton, and Kubicia are great too.

People might be wondering about Barrichello in my list. But, in my opinion, he's just too old. He used to be great. But soon the G's will fling his head off of his shoulders. He just needs to slow down and do some Le Mans like a lot of the getting-to-old drivers do.

    There is my opinion.

  21. I struggle to find a best driver as I see good and bad points in all of them!

. Kmmi he is an extremely solid driver but ( I know it gonna sound weird) I don't think he is driving as good as he did in a Mclaren, where he often impressed me from coming through the field after endless engine penalties.

. Lewis is brilliant but seems too impatient for sucess, as a previous question said a year with a small team would of steadied his over the top urgency. Jean Alesi the 2nd.

Fernano is TECHNICALY the best driver, his domination of the good Gincarlo Fisichella proved that he is the best in the field but he is a complainer who has cost himself a championship winning car this year, if he kept his head down at Mclaren or stayed at Renault, he would of been champ last year.

Felipe is hard to judge, on his day like at Turkey, or a Brazil 2006, he can dominate but sometime he leaves his brain at home....... this year is his only real chance at the title, I feel.

    Other drivers worth considering,

Robet Kubica, the most level headed of the new generation, a definate title winner in the future.

Jenson Button, if he hadn't tarnished his carrer when there were contract issues between BAR and Williams in 2004, I think he would of won more races, he could of gone to wiliams, then on to the BMW project. Still the smoothest driver in the field by some margin, he has to pray the 09 Honda is a stormer, or its career over.

  22. Fernando Alonso

Kimi Raikkonen comes in 2nd, and David Coulthard in 3rd.
